In the Right Place

This is New Orleans music at its finest.From the syncopated rhythyms of the mighty Meters (surely the funkiest outfit since James Brown) to the gravel voiced voodoo of the good Doctor. The horn arrangements of Allen Toussaint also deserve a special mention. Standout tracks for me are 'Right place wrong time'(checkout the bass line of George Porter jnr) and 'Qualified' which paste an idiot grin to my face every time I hear them. A top 100 album for sure.

Gris-Gris

I don't know too much about later Dr John. I have had this album on my Ipod for ages without listening and it is with a slightly shamed face that I say I only really sought it out again after hearing cher's (!!)version of Walking on Gilded Splinters on the david Holmes/Cherrystones CD. Like nothing else I own, but fantastic. I treasure the day that I got bored and drunk on the train from Charing X and gave it a go. vocal-wise the nearest comparison is capt. beefhart, but it is far more accessible than that. Just. Really. Really. Good. If you're reading this review - forget Cher, concentrate on the Davis Holmes and if that sounds right then give it a pop. late edit: reading other reviews I would just say that the running time might be short ... The Sun Moon and Herbs

This classic recording sees Dr John's transformation into the persona of the Night Tripper fully complete. Richly textured and sumptuous, this is a CD that must be owned.

Opening with Black John The Conqueror, wait for the thrill as the gospel-like tones of the backing singers and stabs of the brass lay down the framework for this recording. Where Ya At Mule follows and is perhaps the only weak point. A little light. A touch too whimsical. Fear not, for Craney Crow takes us firmly back into Night Tripper territory with its fusion of jazz, psychedelia and pseudo-Southern black magic. We are then propelled into Familiar Reality, and for me, one of the best intros ever. Something to enjoy. Again and again.

Desitively Bonnaroo

Following on from the Doctor's 1973 collaboration with new Orleans funk greats The Meters that spawned the phenomenal 'In The Right Place' this album appeared less than 12 months later and followed the same blueprint with the legendary Allen Toussaint again handling keys and production duties. It's hard to fault the decision to repeat the 'fonky' R'n'B brilliance of 'Right Place' and 'Desitively Bonnaroo' more than holds its' own making it the perfect companion piece. The sinuous funky rhythms of drummer Joseph Modeliste and bassist George Porter infuse everything with a deep groove that is totally infectious and Toussaint's tasteful keys perfectly blend with the good Doctor's jazzy piano. Creole Moon

Another great album from a very underated musican, in the notes of the cd Dr. John says that this is a very personal album and you can hear that in the lyrics.
From the first track You Swore then onto Holdin' Pattern all the way to the final track One 2 A.M. too many this is a great CD. buy it!!!!!

I'm afraid I was hoping for some more Creole mysticism, and this is much noiser, more confusing and just not very easy to listen to! Obviously one for the jazz specialist, not the Gris-Gris fan

City That Care Forgot

After the slightly disappointing "Mercenary" album this is a wellcome return to form for the good Doctor.This album sees him offering a spicey gumbo of pop,jazz,soul,funk,blues and a hint of voodoo.If you liked the "Creole moon" album then you'll love this one.Like most of his albums these days there is a sprinkling of guest stars like Eric Clapton,Willie Nelson and jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard to add to the mix.The album title gives you a clue as to the basis of the songs for this album with most of them penned by Mac himself.The pick of the album is in fact the title track "The city that..." which is a slow voodoish blues with Dr john digging deep for some real feeling and "Dream warrior" is a voodoish funk with a nice tight rhythm.Songs like "Landgrab" and ... The Very Best of Dr. John

This is an excellent compilation of Dr John, that makes a perfect introduction to the mans many talents. As producer, guitarist, pianist, writer, voodoo rock star and Jazz and Blues musician you are bound to find something you like here.

You want to hear the Piano playing that inspired Jools Holland? Listen to the 'Honey Dripper' from the marvellous solo Piano album 'Dr John plays Mac Rebennack'. His early 70's material (mainly produced by Allen Toussaint) is well represented by 'Right Place Wrong Time', 'Such A Night', 'Iko Iko', 'Qualified', What Comes Around', 'Mos' Scocious' and of course a cover of Professor Longhair's 'Tipitina' (another chance to hear his Piano skills).

Crawfish Fiesta

This is the last record officially recorded by the great Professor Longhair. If you don't know Fess was the Godfather of post 1940's New Orleans Piano. From somewhere he virtually invented a new style that Dr John, Allen Toussaint, James Booker (and our own Jools Holland) all borrowed from to differing degrees. Willie Fugal's Blues perhaps represent this best on this album. This is solo Piano except for added Conga.
His vocal style is also quite unique as well. Deceptively simple which occasionally becomes a sort of yodel.
This is a joyous record with 3 Sax players, a conga player and Dr John on Guitar. The recording quality is very good, as this was recorded in 1979 or 1980.
