I take the cynical view: After the comparatively phenomenal success of the previous year's "Breezin'", I believe Benson and the people behind him figured they'd cash by giving the people even more of what they'd concluded they wanted. And let's be honest; although the instrumental title track of that album was all over the radio too, it was the vocal track "This Masquerade" that was the real big hit. A Grammy winner, no less.
So this time, Benson goes for not just one vocal track, not just two, not three but a whole FOUR! - "Nature Boy", "The World Is A Ghetto", "Gonna Love You More" and "Everything Must Change" - launching the album (and his career) fully into pop territory. The balance felt all wrong and I heard that a lot of ... Read More:

I've had the cassette version of this since I was a little girl (many years ago) and I still listen to it and love it as much now as I did then. I am so pleased to have found this on CD especially as my old stereo with cassette is about to die.
George has a great voice, easy to listen to tracks and timeless tunes which get you singing along in no time. I would say that this is the best of anything he has done.
There are a couple of other songs that I like, well knows ones that would be great on here too, but I'd chose this over any other of his albums.
Release Date December 23, 1999
never the most consistent of artists, george has really come up with the goods on this sublime album which is tailor-made as the soundtrack for your amorous liaisons on the couch. just add the sangiovese and your squeeze. thrill to the magic that is living inside your love and enjoy everything right through till the hypnotic and seductive before you go. then savour unchained melody. recommended music for a long, languid soak in a hot tub. and if you love this, don't go home without randy crawford's naked and true. real lotus-eater type stuff which is the perfect antidote to the meretricious pap that we are currently bombarded with.

There are a lot of things one could call George Benson, but repetitive is not one of them. Having earnt his stripes at a very young age (drawing comparisons to the great Wes Montgomery early on and playing for Miles Davis), Benson had a lot to live up to in his solo carreer.
His early recordings for Verve established him as a powerful and original leader, and his albums for CTI are among the finest albums the label ever put out. Then, in 1976, he tried his hand at pop which, unfortunately for fans of his early work, he has stuck at ever since.
Most jazz purists dismiss this album as comparable only to the contrived, over-produced jazz/pop crossover music that followed it and made Benson a star to people outide jazz circles. ... Read More:

If you love smooth jazz with all danger and surprise removed then you might go for this. If you are hoping to find Benson at the top of his game as a serious guitarist then give it a wide birth. Ditto with all other musicians here.
This CD is full of top-drawer talent but the problem is that they are all so very restrained and rehearsed and the result is low fat sweet cheese. YUK!
Al hardly sings a song on it and mostly just scats rhythmic ideas that sometimes sound like an old man running for a bus. Definitely out-sung by Benson here.
George is always great on a guitar, but again this is the super smooth George and lacks any real soul and conviction. (wish I could play like him though).

Benson followed "In Flight" with this live album, recorded at The Roxy in Hollywood on the 30th of September, 1st of October and 2nd of October 1977. Everyone who played on the previous album is here on this one and it's a great collection of 11 songs, again produced by Tommy LiPuma. The standout for me, is the hit "On Broadway" with its memorable beat break served up by Harvey Mason and Ralph MacDonald.
Benson's version here of "Down Here On The Ground" is another personal favourite of mine, as is "Lady Blue", and he also does a live version of "The Greatest Love Of All", the original version of which was a huge hit for Benson in 1977, off the soundtrack to the Muhammad Ali movie "The Greatest". Personally, I prefer the studio version (availble on ... Read More:

I was still quite young when the disco craze hit the world, certainly way too young to enjoy what was going on in nightclubs, not too young to enjoy the music though! My favourites at the time were undoubtedly this band. I recall dancing to all the hits at school disco's and once at a very magical evening trip to a local ice rink disco, with the youth club. But as well as stirring memories of the the late 70's and early 80's revisiting these tracks creates thoughts of just how stylisticly variable, vocally accomplished and downright excellent this band was! They deserved a lot more credit way back when and they do know. I defy you not to want to dance like crazy to "use it up" and "back to my roots" and I absolutley defy you to listen carefully to "native New ... Read More:
