If this was the best of Clapton then there would be none of his albums in my collection. No surprise to see Phil Collins was involved, this is Clapton sans fire, sans soul, sans almost everything. Despite his inconsistent output he has produced some magical albums from Mayall onwards, be picky there are much much better albums than this MOR, corporate moneygrabber.

As I've posted some complaints on Amazon about incompleteness of compilations (missing an artist's best-known track, apparently just to hack people off), I'd like to go the other way on this one.
Obviously this compilation is not "complete". That would require not two CDs but, er, an awful lot of CDs. It is a very fair cross-section of Mr C's career from Cream onwards, charting his emergence as a solo artist, the relative blandness of the early 80s, and his return to form from the late 80s onwards.
To be more comprehensive, it should include the early era as well, i.e. Yardbirds and Mayall. This doesn't bother me, but the blues fans might object. The Cream tracks are a mite superfluous; if you want Cream material, you ... Read More:

This is a wonderful album. It marked Clapton's sobriety following his heroin usage, and has a theme of redemption and rebirth running through it. Also, there's a strong taste of someone who has turned himself inside and out.
In places, this is passionate, elsewhere playful, and in many places you can hear a man asking himself what he has left. Fantastic stuff, strongly recommended.

I have a few of Eric Clapton's albums plus a few he's recorded in other bands and 'Slowhand' typifies how frustrating he is. Rightly regarded as one of the greatest rock guitarists, he never seems to produce an album about which you can say, 'That's the one.' Instead, what you get are a handful of brilliant gems and an equal measure of forgettable, if competent, workouts.
The three heavyweight tracks appear at the front of the album. 'Cocaine' has never been one of my favourite songs, but he does deliver it with impressive force. 'Wonderful Tonight' worked its way into the public consciousness over many years and is the kind of tender song that's difficult to pull off without sounding watery. 'Lay Down Sally' deserves more recognition, in my opinion. ... Read More:

I was going to mention Clapton's christening of the Les Paul, Marshall setup, but others have beaten me to it. I liken it's impact to what happened to harp playing when Little Walter and other's deciding to blow through the PA or an early guitar amp. They REDEFINED the sound of the instrument.
So all I'll add is the rhetorical question...can you imagine being a teenage Brit, having been reared on the sounds of the Beatles, Jerry and the Pacemakers, or even the Dave Clark Five, wandering into a London club because someone had recommended the Bluesbreakers, and hearing THIS STUFF? Probably as epiphanic as being a white guy in mid 50's Chicago and having the nerve to wander into the Dew Drop Inn and hearing Muddy, Wolf, or later, Otis Rush and Buddy ... Read More:

I hadn't listened to anything by old slow hand in years, but I saw this CD going cheap and thought "why not?". All of the tracks on here are as fresh as the day they came out. Wonderful Tonight, Layla etc have all stood the test of time. Now I can't stop listening to it!

This is one of the few albums that can be classed as a masterpiece. From the perfectly crafted album opener 'I Looked Away' to the evocative 'Bell Bottom Blues', the powerful blues of 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out' to the great riff on 'Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad', the masterly Hendrix cover 'Little Wing' and of course the song that never loses it's power 'Layla', this album has so many gems and brilliant tracks it is hard to know where to begin. 'Layla' sounds so powerful, especially sitting amidst the other tracks on this album, and on reflection it really does adhere to the 'timeless' label heaped on lesser songs. This songs till ignites after all these years. This albums shows EC playing at his height and most creative and although he has played ... Read More:

All blues and every track has character and fire. Some of Clapton's very best work on the guitar I think. If you like EC in blues mode you'll love it.

I really looked forward to receiving Cale and Clapton's cd. Quite frankly I was disappointed with this cd. Maybe I expected too much from this ace guitarist. I found its content flat, repetative and uninspiring. Would I buy it again? No. It just sounds like a Clapton jamming session which doesn't push any perameters especially the vocals. Yes, Clapton is a superb guitarist without doubt and this cd just doesn't inspire me at all.

It was so good to hear this album which I had played to death on vinyl and after about 7 years of not hearing it I was so pleased that it had lost nothing of it's original appeal. I think the thing that appeals to me most is the production of the album which shows what a fantastic producer Russ Titleman is(just listen to Toto albums and you will see what I mean)and that really makes the difference for as much as I love EC I really miss the Titleman touch when you see him live. This album does stand the test of time and stands up very well against recent albums by Eric.
