Journeyman

by: Eric Clapton

Release Date November 06, 1989
It was so good to hear this album which I had played to death on vinyl and after about 7 years of not hearing it I was so pleased that it had lost nothing of it's original appeal. I think the thing that appeals to me most is the production of the album which shows what a fantastic producer Russ Titleman is(just listen to Toto albums and you will see what I mean)and that really makes the difference for as much as I love EC I really miss the Titleman touch when you see him live. This album does stand the test of time and stands up very well against recent albums by Eric.

Blues Breakers

by: John Mayall, Eric Clapton

Release Date December 15, 2000
I was going to mention Clapton's christening of the Les Paul, Marshall setup, but others have beaten me to it. I liken it's impact to what happened to harp playing when Little Walter and other's deciding to blow through the PA or an early guitar amp. They REDEFINED the sound of the instrument.

So all I'll add is the rhetorical question...can you imagine being a teenage Brit, having been reared on the sounds of the Beatles, Jerry and the Pacemakers, or even the Dave Clark Five, wandering into a London club because someone had recommended the Bluesbreakers, and hearing THIS STUFF? Probably as epiphanic as being a white guy in mid 50's Chicago and having the nerve to wander into the Dew Drop Inn and hearing Muddy, Wolf, or later, ... Read More:

461 Ocean Boulevard

by: Eric Clapton

Release Date March 17, 1997
This is a wonderful album. It marked Clapton's sobriety following his heroin usage, and has a theme of redemption and rebirth running through it. Also, there's a strong taste of someone who has turned himself inside and out.

In places, this is passionate, elsewhere playful, and in many places you can hear a man asking himself what he has left. Fantastic stuff, strongly recommended.

PILGRIM

by: Eric Clapton

Release Date March 09, 1998
'Pilgrim' is definitely an album that grows on you and takes repeated listening before you really enjoy what it has to offer. The actual music and songs are pretty good and there are some real gems hidden on this album. The problem is Simon Climie's terrible production. Never have I heard such flat, uninspiring rendering of any artists work, especially Clapton. Unfortunately Climie continues to produce for Clapton, which is a real shame. Choosing a friend to produce your work is one thing, but production like this is unforgivable. Never the less this album has some great blues and a wonderfully melancholic feel to it, perfect for late night listening sessions or down beat moments. I do recommend this album, but try to look past the dire production and flat sound.

Me and Mr. Johnson

by: Eric Clapton

Release Date March 22, 2004
'Me and Mr Johnson' has some solid playing from EC and his love and mastery of Robert Johnson's musics is pretty evident on this album. I think the reason why this album gets slated as much as it does is because the terrible Simon Climie production relegates it to the 'elevator' music described by other reviewers. The music and playing are pretty good (although without the fire and passion of 'From the Cradle') but the production is yet again flat and uninspiring. When will EC learn everyone hates this style of production and it does nothing for his music? This album is very polished and slick, which detracts from the rawness of the blues played, but there are some good tracks here and it's a good homage from EC of Johnson's amazing playing and song writing. A solid 3 stars, ... Read More:

Slowhand

by: Eric Clapton

Release Date March 17, 1997
I have a few of Eric Clapton's albums plus a few he's recorded in other bands and 'Slowhand' typifies how frustrating he is. Rightly regarded as one of the greatest rock guitarists, he never seems to produce an album about which you can say, 'That's the one.' Instead, what you get are a handful of brilliant gems and an equal measure of forgettable, if competent, workouts.
The three heavyweight tracks appear at the front of the album. 'Cocaine' has never been one of my favourite songs, but he does deliver it with impressive force. 'Wonderful Tonight' worked its way into the public consciousness over many years and is the kind of tender song that's difficult to pull off without sounding watery. 'Lay Down Sally' deserves more recognition, in my opinion. The playing on this is ... Read More:

The Road to Escondido

by: JJ Cale and Eric Clapton

Release Date November 06, 2006
I really looked forward to receiving Cale and Clapton's cd. Quite frankly I was disappointed with this cd. Maybe I expected too much from this ace guitarist. I found its content flat, repetative and uninspiring. Would I buy it again? No. It just sounds like a Clapton jamming session which doesn't push any perameters especially the vocals. Yes, Clapton is a superb guitarist without doubt and this cd just doesn't inspire me at all.

Backless

by: Eric Clapton

Release Date September 09, 1996
This may not be Clapton's finest hour as a guitar player. But amongst the post 'God' collections of shall we say Laid Back Clapton, this could well be the finest. It is such a pleasure to listen to this album...pretty damn consistent in its quality...and although no guitar heroics here, there are some songs which remain my favourite in his entire back catalogue. He is of course helped by having Bob Dylan contribute two songs here, the sublime opener 'Walk Out In The Rain' and the rocking opener to side 2 (vinyl) 'If I Don't Be There By Morning'. One can imagine Claptons's joy at hearing the demos sent to him by Dylan. And apparently he was offered four songs. What happened to the other two? As far as I know they have never surfaced. Maybe they were crap. I doubt it.

Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs

by: Derek & The Dominos

Release Date March 17, 1997
This is one of the few albums that can be classed as a masterpiece. From the perfectly crafted album opener 'I Looked Away' to the evocative 'Bell Bottom Blues', the powerful blues of 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out' to the great riff on 'Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad', the masterly Hendrix cover 'Little Wing' and of course the song that never loses it's power 'Layla', this album has so many gems and brilliant tracks it is hard to know where to begin. 'Layla' sounds so powerful, especially sitting amidst the other tracks on this album, and on reflection it really does adhere to the 'timeless' label heaped on lesser songs. This songs till ignites after all these years. This albums shows EC playing at his height and most creative and although he has played as well since, this album stands ... Read More:
