Spotlight Kid, the/Clear Spot

I wondered why these two albums had been packaged on one cd. Now I know: they complement each other so well. Now, depending where you get your information from, the albums have either been placed in reverse chronological order, or they haven't. I don't really care. It doesn't really matter. Nevertheless, I listened to The Spotlight Kid a few times first.

Yes, The Spotlight Kid is quite bluesy (for want of a better word). It's slower and less manic than Safe As Milk, and way, way, way less complicated than Trout Mask Replica. That's not a bad thing though. This time around you can listen to the Captain actually sing once again! I first heard this when it was released, in the UK, on Sunset Records, a budget label who also released the Bonzo Dog Band albums etc. This was one of the albums that nearly everybody I knew at the time had in their collection. In the late 1970s when Punk and second hand record shops arrived in Dundee this was one of the albums that people couldn't give away. In that era peopel were casting off their previous music collections and getting rid of anything Prog Rock or Hippy, this album falling into the latter category.

I deeply resented being told that I shouldn't like all the stuff I liked before so I clung on my own judgement and still consider this as a classic, not just of Beefheart's career but I would put it in my top 10 1960s albums, and ... Read More:

To my old chum Paul Harisson, when we started to discover the pure music that is Captain beefheart? Not as arhythmic as Troutmask or as overproduced as the still-wonderful Strictly personal ( and how I wish i hadn't swapped the divers-bell gatefold album for Led Zep II), but the first time that I realised there was music inside strange sounds, and outside of the bubblegum crap that was, and still is, most popular music.

So with mind-boggling circularity I bought this album on a recommendation based on the recommendation of my much younger self. And they say Philip K Dick is all fiction.

I grew up with my older brother bringing new, interesting and sometimes disturbing or challenging sounds into our house. The good Captain fell into the later category but although it was challenging to my young ears I absorbed it and began to really like it. The problem really lay in the fact that it was HIS music and not mine.

Later, after the ironically titled Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans and Moonbeams seemed to signal the Captains decline I came across this, Shiny Beast on its release. This was my own Captain Beefheart album and it was terrific!

The Best of Frank Zappa

This is a wonderful CD - buy it if you haven't heard Zappa before - it's a great start and a good insight into his work during the 70's. However it's not his "best", even of that period - rather a safe (by Frank's standards) selection of his shorter, more conventional material from a number of albums, including 3 tracks from Overnite Sensation and 2 from Aprostrophe. The tracks feature many of FZ's famous satirical pastiches of a variety of rock genres with his zany, irreverent and rude lyrics, liberal political viewpoints and a lot of blistering guitar solos. Musical highlights are Peaches en Regalia (instrumental), Dirty Love, Yellow Snow, San Ber'dino, Montana, Muffin Man and Cosmik Debris but the hilarious Bobby Brown and Moon Zappa's Valley Girl are also superb. One of the most influential releases ever to grace the world of popular music, its effects shaped the course of Glam Rock, Punk, Goth, New Romantics, Indie and no doubt music which is not very good. It's a truly special album, which deserves its hype amongst music critics and fans alike.

Released in 1967 on The Verve Record Label, The Velvet Underground and Nico really does stand out from the other albums recorded during 1966/67. When we talk about the production going into other 1967 releases like Sgt Pepper, or even the closest British equivalent to the Velvets; Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates, The Velvet Underground and Nico's production on their debut is pretty much none existent, but that surely is the point.
