I love everything Beck does as i love his voice and creativity.
I find the album Mellow Gold to be a regular fave and always listen more to his old stuff for its natural raw creative genius quality.
I was blown away the day i found Beck and ever since then have been a devoted admirer since 1997+
Though since he got married he seems to have grown up a little too much!!!
Love 2 Beck xXx

This, I think, is still Beck's finest musical excursion to date. I've read a lot of the other reviews, and I understand some people's reservations about it, and that they prefer other Beck records, but this one is just a maze of audacious musical twists and turns. The attention to detail is just astounding. A while ago I read that Beck would spend 8 hours making just 16 seconds of the music on this record. It shows. It's so intricate, there are so many sounds and frequencies intertwining yet never getting lost, never growing confused, never sounding out of place that I can't help but be amazed.
When I heard comparisons to Prince on it's release I wasn't thrilled. But you don't have to like that style of music to enjoy this record. This record ... Read More:

Mutations is Beck's most melodious and accessible album, but that doesn't mean he's copped out. Beck is a sponge - yet to settle down into a style of his own, but absorbing influences from all everywhere, and fashioning his own versions of them all.
Although the pundits appear to think this album occupies the semi-acoustic rock territory ruled by REM etc, to me it feels mainly rooted in the 70s - think Led Zep and you have the sitar & hurdy-gurdy laden second track 'Nobody's fault but my own' , mix in Lindisfarne's blokiness and you have 'Bottle of blues'. In between you have some pure C&W in 'Cancelled check', bossanova fun in 'Tropicalia', and a waltz Tom Waits would be proud of in 'Sing it again'.
But there are still more gems - 'Diamond ... Read More:
He's a man of average talent elevated far beyond his ability by a desperation for icons and leaders. "Guero", his latest experiment, sounds like the work of an tired pack of hired funk guns from the 80's, the kind that he parodied so excellently with his Prince-lite "Midnite Vultures" in 1999. Unlike that album, this time Beck seems to have dropped his melodies off at the pool and let his muse wander unfettered, or unfocused, if you prefer.
Strip away the ideas and gimmicks, the often diverse musical styles and what do you get? You don't get much. Long meandering songs with lyrics that read like sixth-form Syd Barrett clones, and shorn of memorable melody. With Beck, the wrapping is the gift. When you see inside, it's hollow. There's nothing ... Read More:

i used to think, "maybe it's me." why do i think this is genius, beck's masterpiece, a record that will make other artists weep at the gift that has touched this beautiful young man's life. i'm not sure beck was loving this much. there's a lot of pain. but then there's a lot of beauty. so maybe i am someone who bends toward the melancholic rather than the light. maybe that's why i think this record is untouchable. or maybe it is simply brilliant.

It pains me to give a Beck album such a low rating, but for me this album is as featureless as the blank graph paper cover it comes in. Yes, as a previous reviewer said, the fact that you can design your own sleeve is the best feature. I designed mine before I'd listened to the album. If I'd listened first, I might not have put any stickers on it at all.
My cover depicts the little furry guy handing a guitar to Beck. I've broken the rules a little to add a speech bubble and a word in biro - the little guy imploring "Play?" of our hero. Beck looks non-plussed. In fact, on "The Information" he sounds non-plussed.
I wish I could say otherwise, but this album seems to be vapid and vacant. There's no emotion here. Beck seems to be sleep-talking through his lyrics, ... Read More:

One thing is for sure that when you buy a Beck album, you never really know what to expect, such is the multi-faceted nature of the artist, and you definitely have to approach most of his albums with an open mind. If 'Modern Guilt' could be compared with any of his previous albums, then many of the songs are closest to the melodic melancholy of 'Sea Change', but with added beats, giving this release a fresh, original sound but with all the characteristics of what makes Beck's music so aurally appealing. Danger Mouse's production matches musical influences often steeped in the late 60's and early 70's with up-front, contemporary percussion, giving much of the album a split-personality sense of laid-back, detached urgency - and it is certainly an interesting combination.

Sorry for this short and lazy review - which is no reflection of my feelings for this album. Oracular Spectacular is superb, MGMT is superb. And going for a bargain price at the time of writing too!

Just how many more albums can Radiohead make of such quality? Other bands become very samey, or try to change and fail. Somehow Radiohead manage to change whilst staying the same and keep producing top quality albums. This album just gets better and better with each listen, and in my view a Radiohead classic already.
Release Date January 28, 2008
Unlike some other reviewers I never listen to Radio 1 and I am immune to any hype that's going around. This is a refreshing and different sound and I would recommend it to anyone. Like other old farts I was a fan of Paul Simon's African phase, and love the sound. I get the impression these guys are doing this for the joy of the music, not to get more sales, and to me that makes all the difference.
