This is the first time I have bought a REM Cd and so far, the tracks I have heard are great. Every song on this album is great.

This was the time when the UK stood up and took notice of Athens' finest. Their bravery in issuing a mandolin led first single was regrettably offset by their foray into cheesy pop. 'Shiny Happy People' and 'Radio Song' aside, this is an excellent record that holds songs of great variety and boasts two of the best songs of that particular era in 'Losing My Religion' and a song so personal that Mr Stipe had to perform it with his back to the audience - 'Country Feedback'. They may have been thrust upon the UK market for all the wrong reasons (see cheesy pop reference above), but in this case the end very definitely justified the means.

Really enjoyed this fast-paced exhilerating album. It's actually the exactb album they promised after automatic but they gave us monster instead. Monster would be an interesting avant-guard sort of thing to be doing these days. Instead we get something so good we just don't deserve it. Unbelievably good and so reminiscent of lots of pre-green albums.

I still have vivid memories of the disgust I felt when I put this album on my stereo for the first time. My only prior experience of their vast catalog was Automatic for the People and Out of Time (with AFTP being perhaps my favourite album at that time - perhaps it still is, but I digress), so this disc was a complete shock to me. Its big, fat, distorted bass sounds, jarring, overdriven electric guitar and "treated" vocals were at least a million miles away from the stripped down acoustic perfection of AFTP.
When I spoke with my friends about it, I was unable to put into words just how much I hated everything about the record. However, after a few more listenings, I found that Strange Currencies appeared to have some redeeming qualities... Crush ... Read More:

REM,s first album for a major label ( Warner Bros for who they signed a five album deal worth $10 million) was their sixth album and arguably the first that saw the band fall from the general standards of excellence they revelled in for their previous five albums on the IRS label. Coincidence? , probably, as under the terms if their contract with W.B. they were allowed complete artistic autonomy . Having pointed that out Green is still worth having in any collection as it does contain some tremendous tracks .
Released on the 7th November in 1988 , one day before the 88 presidential election , the recording of Green marked a significant shift in the groups recording methods. This was a conscious decision by the group ( no doubt with the compliance of producer ... Read More:

Well my answer to this is a big YES! Having owned all the newer albums I decided to delve into the older stuff they did and wow am I glad I did. Ok it doesnt quite come up to scratch with New Adventures in Hi-Fi that quirky sound and beautiful shiny finish, but this is where REM first started they sound great and its the sort of music you put in your car stereo and you just sing your heart out. Tracks like the cover King of the Road and of course So Central Rain along with the absolute classic Its the end of the world as we know it and the one I love. Ok so most of the others many will not know by looking but it soon becomes apparent how many REM song you actually know.
Oh and did I forget to mention The Best of REM is coming soon I CANT WAIT! In the mean time get this ... Read More:

I have just got the box set recently, and have been enjoying it greatly. Not just that, my three daughters aged 9, 6 and 2 are great fans, and want to listen to it all the time in the car. And the two-year-old even says 'Rock' once she hears the first few bars of 'We will rock you'. Just goes on to show that Queen truly made ageless music, which still scores far above most contemporary music.

I thought it would be interesting to see what customer rating this album has after looking at all the 'return to form after the last two disappointments' reviews of Accelerate. I like Accelerate but I prefer this one, it having several standout songs for me, including The Lifting, She Just Wants To Be, I'll Take The Rain and Beat A Drum. It's just how I feel of course, so it might not be any use to you and I'm sure others are more descriptive, but the album as a whole to me feels like a familiar, claustrophobic summer - but more pleasant than that sounds. Check out the version of Beat A Drum on the Best Of REM double CD if you like the standard version on this album. I like it even more...

Having recently re-visited REM's entire back catalogue - I have to say that i reckon this album is due a re-think in terms of rating!!
It groans under the pedestrian weight of its own pretentiousness - and songs such as E-Bow the Letter are sooooo mind numbing I can't believe its the same band that could produce such beauty as Swan Swan H and such positivity as I Believe!!
Its only redeeming feature however IS Electrolite. Beautiful. Wonderful.
I can hear you all now screaming "What about Around The Sun!! Or Up?!?! Or Reveal (another overrated one)"... But they all have something that this doesn't - live.. they translate - ESPECIALLY Around The Sun... this one is for bargain bins and evenings with your friend who smoke pipes and wants to discuss symbolism and Styp-ean meaning.......
