Like other reviewers, I saw Rory at a festival and was hooked. It was Woburn Abbey in 1968 and we had already had our ears reamed by a quite dreadful performance by Hendrix - out of tune (horribly), out of time (woefully), perfunctory, noisy, uninspired. In fact, I wonder if the Great God was like this on stage more often than not. Anyway, on the Sunday evening on came Taste and just blew Hendrix and his foul noise away - and I was very far from the only one to think that although few would admit it today since Hendrix has been canonised.

On The Boards

If you want to experience the talent of Rory then buy this album, he plays fantastic alto sax, harmonica and of course his magical guitar. Every track is blinding, I have been listening to this album since my Dad introduced me to Rory 15 years ago when I was 13 and I still love it!!!

There is no other artist I know of that can blend Jazz blues and rock in such an original way.

... splice the two halves of "Feel So Good" back together - it hardly smacks of a carinng reissue. Still it is the youthfull Gallagher in roaring form!

Blues Breakers

I was going to mention Clapton's christening of the Les Paul, Marshall setup, but others have beaten me to it. I liken it's impact to what happened to harp playing when Little Walter and other's deciding to blow through the PA or an early guitar amp. They REDEFINED the sound of the instrument.

So all I'll add is the rhetorical question...can you imagine being a teenage Brit, having been reared on the sounds of the Beatles, Jerry and the Pacemakers, or even the Dave Clark Five, wandering into a London club because someone had recommended the Bluesbreakers, and hearing THIS STUFF? A Hard Road

Where is 'Greeny'? I just can't believe it. The most stunning, emotional bluesy Peter Green song and it is not on this otherwise brilliant album. I now have to dig deeper and purchase the double CD version which is quite a bit more expensive just for this one track alone.

Live from Nowhere in Particular

What a disappointment!

I put this into the cd player hoping to be blown away by some seriously good blues/rock but....well, 6 plays later, I'm still waiting. Maybe it's too American for my taste but if you want good blues/rock music tune into Paul Rodgers, Free, Ian Siegal etc.

Joe Bonamassa can certainly play (apparently he opened for BB King when he was 12!) but I couldn't discern any connection with the noise coming out of the speakers.

Soul-less.

Rory Gallagher - Live At Cork Opera House [1987]

As a fairly recent convert to Rory Gallagher I would say that this dvd is a pretty good place to start (I'm now in the process of buying all of his albums). I particularly like the blues sound of this performance. Why only 4 stars ? - well, because the editing just doesn't match the quality of the performance (Rory is amazing). Just too many shots of the bass when the action is actually going on with Rory. The acoustic items, however, are simply stunning. RIP Rory - see you all in Ballyshannon next year ?
