I'm puzzled about all the 5 star reviews here. This record does not deserve 5 stars. It's slightly above average and that's it.I couldn't decide between 2 and 3 stars.

The last 2 songs are the best, particularly "Stacks". Otherwise the singer's voice can be annoying and the songs, in general, have a deeply somniferous effect...like watching a very slow arthouse French movie.

Modern Guilt

One thing is for sure that when you buy a Beck album, you never really know what to expect, such is the multi-faceted nature of the artist, and you definitely have to approach most of his albums with an open mind. If 'Modern Guilt' could be compared with any of his previous albums, then many of the songs are closest to the melodic melancholy of 'Sea Change', but with added beats, giving this release a fresh, original sound but with all the characteristics of what makes Beck's music so aurally appealing. Danger Mouse's production matches musical influences often steeped in the late 60's and early 70's with up-front, contemporary percussion, giving much of the album a split-personality sense of laid-back, detached urgency - and it is certainly an ... It strikes me how nobody is talking about how awful this record sounds. It is loud, compressed... It seems to have been mixed directly into an mp3 player; the saddest thing of all is that it has some of the better songs Weller has ever written... Someone has to do something with the awful sounding records released today, because nobody seems to notice.

I can not believe that Brian and his marvellous band can produce another masterpiece. I was priviledged to witness this live at Royal Festival Hall in London last September and like the whole audience was gobsmacked. Please Brian keep recording, the music industry needs you.

Much of the time bands who have gone into hibernation return with albums which are mere shadows of their previous work. This album is the complete opposite and successfully captures the eerie tones which occupy many of their best songs. I simply cannot pick a favourite from an album which oozes style.

At the Fillmore 1970: Performance Series Vol.2

I have been a fan of Neil's for more than 35 years, and have been generally disappointed with his output this decade (never mind the Geffen years). Throughout his career his albums have been patchy. That's part of his appeal - crap and genius. But this album is wonderful. It sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday and is at the apogee of guitar rock - this is what it's all about. Neil Young has written some of the prettiest pop tunes, some of the most dissolute, and dragged out of himself some of the most moving noise. This set ranks with Weld - which for me is praise indeed. And the chance to hear the core Horse is an honour. While it often it feels a little sad to be raving over things from your youth, this is a real gem.
