my fav metallica album by far, kill em all was good but i never saw the big deal with ride the lightning and the puppets album but this is summat else each track goes on for ages with different guitar riffs and some good lyrics, its also the kinda album you can bang your head to as it goes from thrash one min to a slower tempo the next, so it suits both the old and new fans of metallica and as for the production i didnt even notice until i read amazons review, plus i think it makes the snare drum sound better.

I'm not much given to hyperbole and "ace" is not a word I've used much since I was 14, twenty years ago, but then I haven't enjoyed an album this much since 1988 either. Certainly not one by Metallica. Death Magnetic, however, is just...ace.

What strikes me is how fresh this album still sounds after over 25 years. Fast, furious and different, I was only 7 when this came out, so can only imagine just how much this must've rocked the Bay Area scene in San Francisco. It does wear it's influences on it's sleeve, but Metallica were still teenagers when they recorded it (imagine any band today managing the same feat?) and you cannot help but be swept away by the enthusiasm behind the record. It pumps out of every one of James Hetfield's riffs, Kirk's solos (yes Megadeth fans, Kirk's, Dave may still be pissed off and claim Hammet stole all his solos, but c'mon, how much can you memorise without sounding imitation - Kirk shows true original talent) and Lars' drums (although he does sound a bitty amateur on ... This was the first Metallica album I bought, after being blown away by the 'Until it Sleeps' video. I was about to hit my teens at the time, and I remember all the bad press surrounding it at the time, but couldn't for the life of me understand why everyone had such a problem with a fantastic album. Although after hearing the 80's stuff, I soon realised why some of the thrash purists might have found 'Load' a bit hard to swallow (arf arf).
However, just because it's different doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad. Far from it. After the trademark thrash sound of the first 4 albums and the Pantera-esque metal stomp of 1991's 'Black Album', Metallica took a bold move with their forray into alternative rock. But it undoubtedly pays off. If anything this album is a ... Read More:

It's one of those things that, when you first think about it, it really doesn't and shouldn't work.
Ever.
But after coming across this album's version of "Nothing Else Matters" on Kerrang! TV, I was shocked and also intrigued by what else the album may have in store.
Now, most people know Metallica as one of the most influencial and outstanding metal bands of all-time, so when fans heard that they would be combining themselves with the San Francisco Symphony, as you can imagine, assumptions were made before they music was even heard.
This is one of the most beautifully constructed albums that I have ever heard, and the fact that it is a live recording just adds to the charm of it all. It holds all the amazing work and most popular songs of the band, but with the added ... Read More:

Amazingly good album, every track is strong, no filler, very inspired, if you're new to AC/DC start here along with Highway To Hell.
Release Date July 02, 2007
Ironic, just how good this band are at covers! This is far more than just a completist's release, it's essential for the Metallica fan!
Some very good covers, all really well played and on the whole, well produced, especially on Disc one which is the more recent covers as produced with Bob Rock. The production here leans far more towards the Black album, than St Anger, with a fat snare, and thumping bass, and sharp, clear guitars. Hetfield's vocals are excellent, with the man unafraid to dabble in a myriad of styles.
Also, Jason Newsted really shines here with some cool bass guitar!!
Highlights are Turn The Page, Loverman, Sabbra Cadabra, Astronomy, Helpless, Crash Course In Brain Surgery (LOVE the bass work here!), Am I Evil, The More I See, The Prince etc.
It's a good intro ... Read More:
