As far as I'm concerned, "Witness" is THE British hip hop anthem; a razor blade-ripped cyclone of a track, ideal for Roots Manuva to rap about beans on toast over (yes, it's that lyrical reference again). The rest varies from quite good to good. "Ital Visions" and "Evil Rabbit" predate Burial by a good five years when it comes to transferring the atmosphere of a rain-soaked London night into sound; in fact, save for the intro, the whole 60 minutes is loaded with heaviness, with mechanical clicks, robosynths and even the occasional sample (there's like 2 on the whole record...), with a sound not unlike Cannibal Ox's The Cold Vein. Like that album, of course, this also should've been condensed, but I applaud Manuva for choosing such a threatening ... Read More:

To begin with, let me be clear that I am no fan of rap for its own sake (as an art form, I feel it has yet to mature). But it should be obvious to any music fan that a record of any genre can cross boundaries. And this is precisely what this album does. I am astounded that AllMusic rated it as Manuva's lowest-scoring effort, because it's a true eye (or do I mean 'ear'?) opener. Roots' preference for zero reverb may make the sound an acquired taste for novices, but that is purely a matter of what one is used to: he manages to craft beautiful music nonetheless. To my mind, this is the perfect hard-hitting pop album, without sacrificing artistic integrity; and his finest lyrical effort to date. He has something to say, yet avoids the cliches of the form. ... I've been a fan of Roots Manuva for a while but it only took me one listen to be sure this is the best thing he's ever done. It hasn't been off my stereo since. If you like hip-hop you need this record.

I've heard a lot about 'production' and how lyrics being negative doesn't matter but this LP proves how good the original ideas behind hip-hop still are and also that you don't need to rhyme negatively to be relevant. This is all about fitting each beat with each word, still not having to be too serious about yourself and just loving the sounds which we can create and doing it all for the enjoyment, the idea behind hip-hop for me.

Im not really one for Dubstep and to be frank, Dubstep annoys me a little. However, one day this guy Burial comes along and changed my life. In a world of changing emotions one often needs a medium to "escape" as it were from life and the crap that comes with it. This is where Burial steps in.
This is quite possibly the finest bit of musical work to ever be made. Its not your orthodox album, it needs to be heard from track 1 to track 13 all in one go. As someone else posted earlier, this is seriously a night bus album. Burial infuses his trademark 2-step sounds with haunting melodies and a crackling in the background that makes this piece work ever more haunting....
Why am i going on? Bloody buy this...when your pissed off or need to escape from everything, ... Read More:

This album starts well, builds to a creshendo and then never looks back. This quite simply is the best British Hip-Hop album ever made. Roots Manuva has been a troubled man and he does not hide this in Awfully Deep. The result is a wonderfully atmospheric album in which you worry for his mind and yet marvel at his music. His timing is perfect, the beats incredibly varied. Compare "The Falling" which is a deep, dark look at the hard negative times in his life, to "Chin High" which is full of heavy jungle style beats and shows his positive approach.
Roots Manuva is a man with an incredible talent, a very deep mind, and the best album in years.

Much of the time bands who have gone into hibernation return with albums which are mere shadows of their previous work. This album is the complete opposite and successfully captures the eerie tones which occupy many of their best songs. I simply cannot pick a favourite from an album which oozes style.
