This is New Orleans music at its finest. From the syncopated rhythyms of the mighty Meters (surely the funkiest outfit since James Brown) to the gravel voiced voodoo of the good Doctor. The horn arrangements of Allen Toussaint also deserve a special mention. Standout tracks for me are 'Right place wrong time'(checkout the bass line of George Porter jnr) and 'Qualified' which paste an idiot grin to my face every time I hear them. A top 100 album for sure.

GUMBO is one of my all-time favourite albums and my favourite in the cannon of my favourite jazz piano player, Dr John.
Back in the 1970s, a pal of mine was a huge Dr John fan and tried very hard to get me enthused about the Voodoo mumblings that made up albums like Gris-Gris and Remedies ... to no avail. Until I heard GUMBO. Though I didn't know it at the time, I was to become a massive fan (via The Blues Brothers) of artists like Junior Wells and the later Atlantic and Stax musicians. What Dr John showed me here was where those musicians took their inspiration from.
I don't think many will argue that Dr John isn't one of the best living jazz pianists we have, and his perky barrel-house style is very much in evidence ... Read More:

This classic recording sees Dr John's transformation into the persona of the Night Tripper fully complete. Richly textured and sumptuous, this is a CD that must be owned.
Opening with Black John The Conqueror, wait for the thrill as the gospel-like tones of the backing singers and stabs of the brass lay down the framework for this recording. Where Ya At Mule follows and is perhaps the only weak point. A little light. A touch too whimsical. Fear not, for Craney Crow takes us firmly back into Night Tripper territory with its fusion of jazz, psychedelia and pseudo-Southern black magic. We are then propelled into Familiar Reality, and for me, one of the best intros ever. Something to enjoy. Again and again.

If this cd dosen't make you dance, sing, move your neck in a rocking motion, feel good, tap your hands on your legs waiting at a red light, laugh, even cry some, if this cd dosen't do any of the above then.. Jack you dead.

Another great album from a very underated musican, in the notes of the cd Dr. John says that this is a very personal album and you can hear that in the lyrics. From the first track You Swore then onto Holdin' Pattern all the way to the final track One 2 A.M. too many this is a great CD. buy it!!!!!

Fantastic album Pacific Ocean Blue, just get it and listen to it, plus the bonus tracks and the additional lost album 'Bambu', all beautifully packaged, make this a worthy tribute to a flawed genius; Dennis Wilson.
Release Date October 06, 1993
I'm afraid I was hoping for some more Creole mysticism, and this is much noiser, more confusing and just not very easy to listen to! Obviously one for the jazz specialist, not the Gris-Gris fan
When you've had a rubbish week and the hum-drum routine is starting to get you down, put this record on and be reassured. I love all of Dylan's work but not all of it is as joyful and pleasurable as this. Like fine food and wine, Blonde on Blonde is one of life's great indulgences.

Like others, I saw the man on Jools Holland. I suppose the romantic in me loved the idea that this guy had experienced the lowest of the lows but had come through it all and was here playing his 3-string geetar live on the JH show. However, I liked what I heard and his enthusiasm for the blues was infectious. Okay, it's not as polished as the great blues musicians and he's not going to outdo Robert Cray for technical ability but just listen to the stories he tells and you'll be tapping your foot along. We all love to see people do well that have faced grim adversity and Seasick Steve provides a soulful, bizarre and honest approach to his version of the blues. So, stop being so cynical and give it a blast.
