I bought this at the request of a friend of my mum's. She lives in a nursing home and has taken an interest in revisiting music of her youth. I've bought several CDs on her behalf but as she and my mum listened to this one she said "It's the best yet". It brought back memories of dancing with her husband when they were both young. She said to mum, "after you go I listen to it again and have a good cry." Her husband had died several years ago.

The Best Of - Volume 2

With all the really famous songs being on the first volume, this compilation is inevitably weaker. If the original intention had been to release two volumes, it is reasonable to assume that the big hits would have been split between them. I am therefore assuming that this compilation was released because of the sales generated by the original volume.

Dedicated Platters fan know that the truly definitive compilation is the 50-track double CD Magic touch - Anthology, which is still in print. Even though this collection avoids all the obvious tracks, 17 of the 18 tracks here are included in that double CD, the exception being a cover of Apple blossom time. looking for an overview of Buddy Holly's work? They don't come much better than this. We can all wish this one was in there or that, but someone somewhere had to make a decision on what went in and what didn't. The result is a good all round representation of the skill, the talent, the sheer joy that was Buddy Holly's music. It is hard to believe all this happened in just 18 months. If anyone ever left a legacy, he did.

I should have read the reviews before purchasing this item and have learned my lesson. They say there is nothing like the originals and that is where this one stands - nothing like the originals - very disappointing.

The Best of the Bachelors

The sleeve picture is of all three original Bachelors; John Stokes and brothers Con and Dec Cluskey (1962 - 1984). The tracks on the CD are later re-recordings made by Con and Dec. For sure, you can tell its them alright but if you want the 'original' sound, look elsewhere.

The Best Of The Mamas And The Papas

Listening to the Mammas and the Papas was a real nostalgia trip but how I hate CD's with tracks that fade out before they finish, it totally spoils the experience. I have a vision of a man behind the stage at a live performance turning a big volume control down leaving the group playing and singing silently to a bemused audience. Had the tracks all been full length I would have given this CD 4 stars.

Etta James is one of my all time favourite female singers and this album is brilliant and it just so happens it is a bargain. For those more dedicated fans I would suggest the complete chess recordings, however, you cannot go wrong by having this in your collection and for those unfamiliar with Etta James, this is a great introduction, which could get you hooked!

The Ink Spots were one of the most popular vocal groups of the forties. There were no record sales charts in Britain back then so I don't know which of their songs were most popular in the UK, but a look at the American charts shows that this collection omits several big hits. Nevertheless, many others are included and all the tracks here are worth hearing, so I don't mind - this is, after all, a budget collection. The sound quality, while not perfect, is fine given the age of the recordings.
