My ex used to say that this band were a novelty, a joke band like that idiotic Crazy Frog, simply because they had a sense of humour.and weren't afraid to use it. Needless to say, she was wrong. Alabama 3 aren't a joke band, but they're a band that see the joke in life. Life is by it's very nature a ridiculous construct. In some respects we shouldn't even be listening to music, but out there chasing dinner and hunting things with spears. Come here, Bambi, you look tasty.
Like normal, Alabama 3 are an obscure mish-mash of a wide variety of influences -and. "Outlaw", their fourth album, refuses to mess with their so far magic (but commercially unsuccessful) formula, and offers a further twelve platters of country western blues ... Read More:

This album will stand the test of time as a hugely enjoyable collection of anthemic songs that worm their way into your head, even after the first listening. They got into mine and haven't left after far too many album plays for my own good.
Whilst missing some of the superb insanity-feel of the debut album "Exile on Coldharbour Lane", this album is more mainstream in its appeal with future classics such as "Wade Into The Water". This and "Sinking" are the leaders amongst song giants such as "Mansion On The Hill" and "Sad-Eyed Lady". It is not often you can buy follow-up albums as good, if not better, than a brilliant debut.
If you ever get the chance to see these intelligent nutters live - take the opportunity because you'll ... Read More:

There's something about Alabama 3 which reminds me of Fun Lovin Criminals, the sound they are creating is not necesserily from an authentic source. The criminals played upon non existent mafia links, Alabama 3 does american dark blues, country wrapped in a technoish sandwich, they just happen to be from Brixton, London. Does that matter, not really, it's created with theatricality, humour, knowing the genre inside out, it's hard to deny that with all the records they have put out, there is no loss of outlaw fun.

'Last Train to Mashville - Vol 2' allows the listener to even further appreciate the lyrical brilliance of Alabama 3. It is correct to say that the earlier CD's should be listened to first, in order to fully understand the cultural and social focus of the Band. Thanks go to my mother, who used watch 'The Sopranos', just to listen to the theme song 'Woke up this Morning', by Alabama 3. It was she who got me hooked on the Band.
PS: I also wondered where was 'Last Train to Mashville - Vol 1' I'll have to go to a live gig and get a copy !!

Exile On Coldharbour Lane and particularly La Peste are two of the best albums ever made. But I can understand why, after these, Rob Spragg et al would want to try and mix things up again for fear of being criticised as samey. Of course, this would be ridiculous for such a innovative band, but you get the point. As a result, though, Power In The Blood is a very different album from the first two. Unfortunately, it is nowhere near as good.
It's entirely a question of balance. That is, the balance between bluegrass and techno (never thought I'd say that, but that's Alabama 3 for you). Exile and La Peste got the balance exactly right, and to a lesser extent the most recent album Outlaw does too. Last Train To Mashville deliberately embraces the countrified side of things, ... As a long time Alabama 3 fan and owner of every single album they have produced this is a complete success. I have spent years trying to recruit fellow music lovers to acquire a taste for thier bizarre music without much success. Now, with this album I can.
Release Date November 27, 2006
Like others, I saw the man on Jools Holland. I suppose the romantic in me loved the idea that this guy had experienced the lowest of the lows but had come through it all and was here playing his 3-string geetar live on the JH show. However, I liked what I heard and his enthusiasm for the blues was infectious. Okay, it's not as polished as the great blues musicians and he's not going to outdo Robert Cray for technical ability but just listen to the stories he tells and you'll be tapping your foot along. We all love to see people do well that have faced grim adversity and Seasick Steve provides a soulful, bizarre and honest approach to his version of the blues. So, stop being so cynical and give it a blast.

For all those who loved Felt Mountain and were horrified at Goldfrapp's complete departure from it with 'Black Cherry' (well, I was horrified, anyway!), you're sure to enjoy this album.
I guess it's unreasonable to expect any band to keep churning out the same material - except for Status Quo who got away with it for years, how I do not know. So I would describe 'Seventh Tree' as a beautiful return to Goldfrapp's original album, but with a slight difference. It is not as dark as Felt Mountain can be in places, but every bit as deep. I would also say it's the most gentle work Goldfrapp has produced.
In short, if you loved Felt Mountain (and loathed Black Cherry) you will love this album.

Sorry for this short and lazy review - which is no reflection of my feelings for this album. Oracular Spectacular is superb, MGMT is superb. And going for a bargain price at the time of writing too!
