Being a huge fan of the books, I was sceptical about the films. Sharpe in the books is massive, scar on the face and black hair, with Harper even bigger. However after half the first movie, these issues were soon forgotten. The first movies you can tell were lower budget and not quite up to the standard of the others, but with good acting they got away with it. After the first 2, you see the budget increasing, and with this and a marvellous Hakeswill I really felt a whole new dimension to the novels. Especially at the new price, I highly recommend this series!

I love Sharpe and Harper. But face it, they're ten years older than in the earlier films. It's doing them a bad turn to pretend otherwise and not to craft the script around that fact. The authors string stereotyped situations with stereotyped villains and bland good guys, a lumpy heroin and a boring femme fatale. Only the enthusiasm of the Indian extras brought some life into it.

I was lucky enough to see John Tams perform at 'The Moseley Folk Festival', in Birmingham, this summer. Until then, though, I only had vague memories of his appearances in 'Sharpe'. However, after hearing him at Moseley, I realised how woefully inadequate my c.d. collection was and after purchasing 'The Definitive Collection', to get an idea of just what I'd been missing out on all these years, went on to buy all his other albums i.e. 'Unity', 'Home' and 'The Reckoning'. He has a well developed ear for melody and it shows in all of his beautifully crafted compositions. I recommend this album as you won't be disappointed.

This is basically 2 Newspaper Christmas stories expanded and published for the fans. As a huge Cornwell & Sharpe fan I really wanted to read these, and was very glad I did. 2 very good stories full of Christmas spirit done in a way that only Sharpe can manage. OK, this is expensive for 2 short stories but a must have for all Sharpe fans, and the profits are for the Sharpe appreciation society and their charities, so was happy to pay for this.

What makes John Tams' songs so special? Well, he has a genius for melody, and his words are intelligent and imaginative. His obvious sympathy with the underdog, both past and present, lends sincerity to his singing and provides much original material. But musically, the reason why these are songs are so unusual is that they are obviously written by a singer, not by a guitarist or a pianist. The melodies seem unrelated to any obvious chords. The rhythms are hard to pin down. They change and develop as Tams shortens or lengthens his lines and changes his pace. The musicians have to follow along as best they can (and they do so brilliantly). The folk-rock of the past was generally driven by the rhythm section of a band. Although Sandy ... Read More:

This movie helped make Sharpe popular to the newer generation of people who havnt ever heard of Sharpe, ever since it was released on tv, ll my friends began to know what i always talk about...sharpe.because i watched the movies and read about half the books and i love it.
I was so disapointed when i first bought sharpes challenge on dvd, because half way through they actualy had the credit and the 'next time' then 'previously' i mean wth it should be a movie not split into 2 just because they did on tv! i didnt like this movie as much as i thought i would but the cast was rather good considering they brought back simmerson obviously however im still upset because al the chosen men have died except harper :(

The series of books on Hornblower is a classic in the sea-adventure-war category. The movies are very well made, with a good cast (perhaps, I see better Crowe (or similar "macho", like Owen) than Gruffud in Horatio's "shoes", but thats' all) good battle and sea scenes and a good "reproduction" of the original books, better than Sharps's series.
A this price is a real bargain. A question: this version has subtitles ??? Soundratcks in foreign languages ?

If you are a Sharpe fan, then this is a nice short story to add to the collection. However DO NOT expect this to be a novel, it's really just like a couple of chapters from a regular Sharpe novel. Saying that, Cornwell manages to get love, plot, betrayal and the obligatory battle into 64 pages! I would have felt short changed on value for money, but seems it's for charity, so won't complain.
