Having cut numerous massive selling 12" singles with Sly and Robbie ("Leaving To Zion", "General Penitentiary", "Shine Eye Gal") for a variety of labels, Black Uhuru were snapped up by Island and given a contract that allowed them enough studio time to make albums, and sent to work with their favourite ryhthm section.

The result was an album that was far ahead of most reggae of its time, and pointed the way towards the emerging digital dancehall sounds, without resorting to the cheap sexism of the "slackness" that so disfigured that music's early years. The Dub Factor

I remember the first time I met someone else who also knew this album. That was about 20 years ago in France, and the bloke was a Punk bloke with the most extreme look and a pronounced taste for very hardcore music. For some reason he was at my place for a party and at some point I played this album. That certainly got his attention as he already knew and loved this album and we struck a lasting immediate friendship there and then.

I think this is the moct important thing about this album. It transcends the closed up Dub world to a larger experimental world of open minded people. Handsworth Revolution

Police And Thieves

This album regularly appears in lists of top reggae albums of all time, indicating that compilers of such lists probably don't own enough reggae records. Undoubtedly, the main reason for its acclaim lies with its opener "Police and Thieves", which is indeed a seminal roots masterpiece but it's fair to say that had it not been popularised by the Clash, this album would still be languishing in obscurity. Perry's production is interesting, but it certainly doesn't reach the majestic heights he achieves on the Congos' Heart of the Congos, and many of the songs here are distinctly unspectacular. Not a bad record, but overrated. For the real classics of 70s roots reggae, try the Mighty Diamonds' "Right Time", Burning Spear's "Marcus Garvey" or the aforementioned ... Read More:

This is some of the most soothing reggae you're likely to hear ( sort of 'night nurse' ( Greg Isaacs ) like in a way ) and yet has the menacing rhythm of the slaver british system skanking in the backyard.
If you want to chill to intelligent music not for de babylon people. This is the one for you, true; sticks to the soul like glue. Harmony mon !

Blackheart Man

`Question is does Bunny sound like Bob, or does Bob sound like Bunny!? No matter, the inspirational source is the same and the result is exultation, as the Blackheart man gives praise to the most high!

Purchased as an after thought while looking for some Burning Spear, this album has kept me so sweet since buying it over a week ago. Tracks 5 & 7 are the only weak points on this solid Roots- Rock- Steady offering. `The Oppressed Song' and `Bide Up' are like medicine for the soul. Buy this. I defy you to be disappointed!
