Ommadawn

This album is so awesome I really don't know what else to say. It is very short, around 36 minutes in total. Two instrumental parts. Each of them shines on its own. Fantastic melodies, amazing build ups to climaxes, and one of the best guitar solos ever (at the end of the second instrumental).

The first part starts with a repetition of the same spanish guitar over and over, with some minor break ups and linkages. This builds up to a passage in which, well, it's difficult to say. If you've got a good stereo you can feel stuff flying and flapping around you. Why are people clicking one star just because it sounds like Mike Oldfield, it is his style. It doesn't really sound like Tubular bells it has a classic music quality to it. Great music.

Platinum

Though this is a good CD, I can not give it 5 stars as there are low points. The second part of the 4 part epic that is platinum is particularly irritating, guitar drives through you and then some stupid voice. The third part has trumpets outstaying their short interesting welcome and a manic piano scale. Not the thing that is conducive for easy listening. The voices that are the wind are interesting though. It might not all work in my opinion, some parts are good.

Five Miles Out

It is hard to comment on this album as it is so fine that I am scared to death that my English won't express my feelings. I am not a musical person as in the sense of commenting on an album from a musical technical point of view. I can only tell what I can sense. And this is what I sense: It takes one's breath away when listening to it, especially for Mount Teidi and Five Miles Out. These songs go right into your heart and pump it so madly with joy and jubilation and sadness. I listen to them again and again with same feelings. I first listened to this album like 10 years ago and it has had this effect on me for years. In the meantime I lost mt tapes etc, and was deprived of them for a long time (like a year). Qe2

Mike has done some great albums in his time, but this is one of the best by far and he should be proud. I would rate this album, one of my all time favourites. I was only 9 yrs old, when I first heard it. From that day I was hooked on Mike's music. I do have this album on vinyl, and is one of my most treasured possesions. Anyone who is listening to Mike for the first time, wouldn't go wrong in adding this little gem to their collection. Taurus 1 is one of my favourite tracks, Wonderful Land is a great tribute to Hank Marvin and the Shadows. QE2 and QE2 Finale are my all time favourite tracks, on the album. SO go out and buy this album now, and let thew magic work for you.

Crises

Mike's music never ages, even if the generous use of synths on Crisis points to the 80s. Every Oldfield album seems to have a technological edge to it which for me makes them a joy to listen to. Starting with a simple and perhaps irreverent tune, the layers of music build and interweave before a moody and seriously catchy title melody `Crises'. At this point I'm aggressively nodding my head - excellent stuff. Again more clever tunes with a dark edge juxtaposed with some gloriously sweet melodies carried by Mike's guitar. The layers of music build once again before a stirring finale which ends with appropriate abruptness followed by a reprise of the simple tune as an after-thought. Ah no.

If you are really desperate to hear tubular bells, can I suggest a good recording of Parsifal? It has the virtue of being, if only subjectively, shorter.

i have been in love with this mans music since radio plays of tubular bells opened my ears to a vision that has reached many highs and a few lows. this album proves......GOD IS BACK BIG TIME.
I HAVENT ENJOYED ON FIRST PLAY AN ALBUM SO MUCH SINCE AS FAR BACK AS INCANTATIONS. EACH track weaves a musical spell that leaves you wanting more , getting better as you get further into the magical sound play that mike has created. if you thought the king was dead.....think again.

Discovery

Written and recorded while fresh from the Killing Fields project and in the throes of a messy marriage beak up, this is an impressively impassioned if often very angry affair - a long way from the cool experimentation of Tubular Bells or Ommadawn.
The heaving, desperate title track stands out, but all eight stand up on their own while making a fine whole, the closing instrumental bringing the strands together while trying to find some final peace.
Barry Palmer's vocals stand out for me - he is a seriously overlooked rock singer.
