Dug this album out this morning for the first time in a while. Sick beats meet a bunch of MCs at the absolute top of their game.
This rates as my favourite straight hiphop album, and is J5's best work to date.
Release Date June 01, 1998
I've heard a lot about 'production' and how lyrics being negative doesn't matter but this LP proves how good the original ideas behind hip-hop still are and also that you don't need to rhyme negatively to be relevant. This is all about fitting each beat with each word, still not having to be too serious about yourself and just loving the sounds which we can create and doing it all for the enjoyment, the idea behind hip-hop for me.

This album is great fun from beginning to end. A lighthearted beat infused concoction this album is always entertaining and never dull. Even the cheesy cookery analogy doesn't tire and adds a bizarre kind of depth to this funky and upbeat album.
The guest vocalists add a dash of pedigree to the catchy tunes and while it is not going to be heralded as groundbreaking it is a cracking album that will never fail to add cheer to your day.
There are no low points with this record and I would advise it as a fail safe record for those people wishing to dabble in the murky waters of the hip hop world. I can guarantee you will not disappointed!

I first got into electronic music a while ago, and frankly couldnt have asked for a better induction. I was recomended this by a friend when I said I liked the electronic stuff on Kid A and he told me that most of it was influenced by this man.
He was right, Shadow is a genius. His skill with a drum machine is matched only by his skill with a sampler and his talent for mixing, perfectly capturing an ever shifting mood with changes of tempo, time signature, key, instruments and genre. Its all captured here, like a beautifully preserved insect in a peice of amber. Jazz, soul, blues, and that ever present loaded-gun backbeat, tying every interesting sample and gorgeous melody together into an amazingly cohesive journey of beats.
It is, like ... Read More:

Like many of the reviews posted, I love J5's previous work. However, this new album seems to be a far cry from what listeners have become used to and love. Many of the tracks on the album seem to be "Pop-Hop" similar to most of the tripe played over the radio, especially "Brown Girl" and "Radio". The album has two saving graces, "Work It Out" and "Back 4 You" but this isn't enough to make a decent album.
Very disappointed

One of the most moving and albums i've heard in a long time that has a perfect blend of hip hop, rap and truly soulful tunes that really make you want shake that booty. My favourite track has to be the seed which i've played over and over again and just can't get enough of. To all you hip hop, body shaking lovers out there, this album is a must! xx

Was blown away when I heard this. I listen to a lot of music, hip hop & rap not being my main area of interest, but I do have a fondness for sick beats and flows and this album has both. DJ Format should be recognised as an extremely talented musician who has incredible talent and taste in music. I don't need to say any more =)

Listening to this album for the first time as I write this review. Tis album is great. Buy it!!
I don't care if these guys are commercial because wvwn the most underground of Hip Hop have to become commercial to make their $$$ so they are all just wannabe gangbangers.

First bona fide Rap album I ever bought back in the late '80s. I confess, it was Thrash Metal veterans, Anthrax constantly banging on about them that convinced me!
Great album with perhaps the most intelligent lyrics ever written for a Rap cd - even though I don't agree with many of the opinions expressed, I respect them.
A production that was way ahead of the time, with great beats, basslines & samples, with a near perfect vocal balance between the intense and angry Chuck D and the more eccentric Flavor Flav. It's easy to see why this had appeal to the Metal crowd with it's heavy, urban tone, militaristic imagery and incendiary attitudes. Indeed, one track, She Watch Channel Zero features a sample of the riff from Slayer's Angel Of Death. EARLY crossover! ... Read More:

Sorry for this short and lazy review - which is no reflection of my feelings for this album. Oracular Spectacular is superb, MGMT is superb. And going for a bargain price at the time of writing too!
