I've often wondered just what it must have sounded like the day the ODJB was first heard in England.Imagine the genteel drawing room with its Victrola for playing the new fangled 78s of ballad singers like John McCormack,Peter Dawson or Dame Clara Butt.Suddenly on goes a 78 by a new American band who the audience think is going to be some brass band playing a March.
The needle hits the record and the Sound of Hell opens up!!!
Yes it was Livery Stable Blues complete with farmyard impressions and what to the audience sounded like hideously discordant music or maybe the phonograph had broken down!
Shortly after the ODJB appeared in England to support a comedian called George Robey who is alleged to have said "either they ... Read More:

This 4 CD set is an absolute bargain for Spanier admirers at the very low price. All the significant recordings he made (including the "big sixteen") are here and in excellent sound, given the age of the source material. The music, whilst containing a number of let's say "familiar" dixieland tunes such as "Royal Garden Blues", "Muskrat Ramble" etc, (all of which have been done to death by countless other bands)also has a large number of lesser known tracks. All are played superbly by Muggsy with his brilliaant lead trumpet and fellow musicians reading like a Who's Who of jazz. For all lovers of the "real" dixieland/chicago style of jazz, if you ain't got it - get it!

This CD on the Living Era label is one of a series dealing with great jazz musicians. Joe Oliver earned his title "King" in New Orleans before any jazz was recorded, and this CD covers the period after he moved to Chicago and then on to New York. All 25 tracks were recorded between 1923 and 1930, and unfortunately some are less than perfect quality.
There can be no criticism of the personnel line-ups on this CD. King Oliver surrounded himself with the best jazz instrumentalists of the time. In 1923 he had invited Louis Armstrong to join him on second cornet in his Creole Jazz Band. This group also included Johnny Dodds on clarinet, but other great names were to follow and the CD combines contributions from Kid Ory, Paul ... Read More:

I'm not sure why the decision was taken to ignore chronological sequence, but CD 1 kicks off with the group-titled April 1957 album, before regressing to the earlier "Django", noteworthy for the four-part "La Ronde Suite" and for drummer Kenny Clarke's last studio appearance with the quartet. The second CD contains two 1956 albums; the earlier stately "Fontessa" which drew inspiration from the improvised form of the Renaissance commedia dell'arte, and the August "Music Inn" session at which clarinettist Jimmy Giuffre guested on three tracks. This is essentially cerebral music, appreciation of which is aided by the crisp and clear remastering. A considerable bargain.

For lovers of dixieland jazz (and Bobby Hackett in particular) this 4 CD set is an absolute bargain at the price. It traces his career from the late 1930's to the early 1950's with great tunes superbly played by the maestro himself and various well-known brilliant fellow musicians, all of whom are masters of this exciting and melodic style of jazz. Go get it - for around a fiver you can't go wrong!!
