I love Ninja Tune records and the tracks on this cd are amazing but it would have been a 5 star review if it had been mixed. Apart from that it is good, especially if you are just finding out about Ninja Tune.

Ninja Cuts - Funkungfusion

Ninja Tunes, Brilliant. Complilation albums, not at all brilliant.

Really this album's a four out of five, with plenty of tunes on there that would warrant a five out of five. It is, however, a compilation album. I may be irrationally prejudiced against compilations, but at least I'm honest about it!

Anyway, prejudices aside, if you do need an introduction to one of the world's finest and most eclectic record labels, then buy some Ninja Tunes material, I've not really encountered anything that's out and out bad from them. To be fair their compilations aren't bad, simply because of the wealth of musical talent that they've go to draw on, listen to the likes of Amon Tobin's 'Sordid,' DJ Food's 'The Crow' or 'Emerald Isle' ... You Don't Know - Ninja Cuts

I have followed Ninjatune for years now and have loved many an artist signed to their label but.......this is well below par for them. If you like what you hear on this compilation I seriously recommend checking out their website, or itunes, to hear what else they have to offer. A lot of tracks on here are substandard for these guys but there are some gems hidden amoungst the dross. I think 2008 has been a bad year for Ninjatune and I hope 2009 brings more sparkle, come on Ninjatune bring back those vibes you were dishing out 2002-2007!!!!

Zen RMX - A Ninja Tune Remix Retrospective

Short and sweet, if you like beats - you just can't fault any of the three (2 CD's, 1 DVD) in the latest Zen retrospective collection.

This particular CD has tracks that some may already own, and some that they don't, either way it's packed with class.

You've got Squarepusher ripping up tracks in his drill'n'bass style, a smooth bossa-nova nova remix of the Herbaliser (Something Wicked), followed straight by an easy-summerfied remix of Mr Bowden. The CD is packed with NinjaTune classics given a bit of an edge.

If you are already into the Zen thing buy it, if you are a novice ninja then maybe head for the Zen Retrospective CD as this might be a little challenging in parts.(or maybe not?)

Keep It Unreal

Mr Scruff (known as Andy Carthy to his mum) is a multi talented DJ producer who is very difficult to pigeon hole (good the way I like it) - his productions on Keep It Unreal are dreamy and very funky, with crazy samples from children's TV of the 50s and 60s.

The finest moment on here for me is Midnight Feast with it's delightful xylophone and jazzy feel, this is a good one for when you want to drift to sleep, and could probably be fun if you're a DJ cutting between tracks - or for scratchin'. Another favourite of mine is Get A Move On, with the sample of an old country record - it's bluesy yet jazz based melody is just fun and can get anyone dancing like a loon.

Altogether this is an excellent album to chill out to late night, to enjoy ... Read More:

If you liked funk in the 70s then this is right up your alley and in my opinion, it's good stuff. It does not quite thrill me like funk did way back then, but of course in those days funk was new on the scene and I was lot younger aswell, so the tendency to get up and shake my tail feather (in a completely embarrassing way) was a good deal greater than it is now. Even so, this record is genuinely funky and it is instrumented in much the way things were back then, so you hear the clavinet, and some scratchy sounding strats and all the rest of them doing their funky thing just how they did back then. So I reckon with a couple of drinks inside me and the right atmosphere this would get me up.

Endtroducing.....

I first got into electronic music a while ago, and frankly couldnt have asked for a better induction. I was recomended this by a friend when I said I liked the electronic stuff on Kid A and he told me that most of it was influenced by this man.
He was right, Shadow is a genius. His skill with a drum machine is matched only by his skill with a sampler and his talent for mixing, perfectly capturing an ever shifting mood with changes of tempo, time signature, key, instruments and genre. Its all captured here, like a beautifully preserved insect in a peice of amber. Jazz, soul, blues, and that ever present loaded-gun backbeat, tying every interesting sample and gorgeous melody together into an amazingly cohesive journey of beats.

I agree with most of the reviewers comments - dark, smokey, jass/fusion etc. etc. I would suggest that anyone who enjoys works from early Soft Machine (first to fifth), Ian Carr's Nucleus, Isotope to Angelo Badalamenti's Fire Walk With Me should give this album a listen.

Trouser Jazz

This is one edgy album. Very unpredictable and fresh. I would recommend this to anyone who likes surreal funk that's a bit mad. Buy it otherwise your world will be too normal!
