I was lucky enough to see The Highwaymen live in when they came to the UK, probably not long after this show was recorded and the show I saw was very similar to the one they did on the DVD. I have always been a huge fan of Willie Nelson and also like the others, but when you see them together you cannot believe you have 4 huge country stars on the same stage, singing together!. The DVD brought back many memories of one of the best live shows I have seen - and I have been to loads. The rapport between the guys is obvious, and regardless of what Willie says about 'all of us having ego's the size of a bus' what cmes over is a fantasic group of country singers doing what they do best. If you like any one of them but havent yet discovered the ... Read More:

Kris has written many beautiful songs and can be considered as one of
the top writers in popular music especiallly in Country. However when
he interpretes his own songs I feel there's something lacking which
prevents him from being a "tophit scorer". His voice is sad and can't
reach the depth needed. Just listen to the same songs sung by others
who made it # 1 hits. Their interpretations are so different from his
and still so much better. Here are some examples:
Help Me Make It Through The Night: #1 by Sammi Smith
For The Good Times: #1 by Ray Price
Me and Bobby Mc Gee: # 12 by Roger Miller
Nobody Wins: # 4 by Brenda Lee
Sunday Morning Coming Down: #1 by Johnny Cash

I purchased this having seen Willie years ago on the George Hamilton show with his long hair and Trigger his aged guitar. I wasn't sure whether Country was for me but I knew a few tracks and thought I would give it a try. It is superb in every way and is not the usual Country Music that we hear from Dolly and others. This is more Country Blues and some of the lyrics are sad and poignant whilst others are good fun. Willie is very versitile and I love this album and have since purchased others and DVD's of his concerts. I have yet to be dissapointed,a true professional and entertaning musician withso much energy. I am definiely a convert to Willie Nelson but I would say I am not a convert to Country & Western Music. My Mum, now 83, is hooked ... Read More:

This is a great opportunity to gather some of the best songs by Waylon Jennings, one of the great "gurus" of country-western. His voice is warm, his music is cool and he is the singer of the lost cowboys! The only problem with this collection is that... it is a collection, thus lacking the spirit gathered in a full album, but if you don't know him, you should get this! Great tunes such as "You asked me to" or the mythical theme from "Dukes of Hazzard" are gathered in here. Excellent for driving, excellent for relaxing!

There can be no doubt that the original coming-together of 'The Highwaymen' was an event that everyone should applaud and enjoy. Their first album was, I feel, their best, with its drama and darkness, but this album does try to run it a close second. If anything, it is rather more upbeat than their first, and there is still the same emphasis upon them sharing lead vocals or switching vocals between verses.
Track 1, 'The devil's right hand' is a rousing opener whereas the gentler, acoustic (almost 'folky') feel of the next track, 'Live forever', is an enjoyable contrast. Definitely more mellow than anything on their first album. The mandolin in that track and the piano and steel guitar in track ... Read More:

I ordered this set after seeing it advertised in an email from Amazon. I was not very familiar with Johnny Cash, with the exception of Boy named Sue and Ring of Fire. This double CD really has blown me away. Cash's voice is great but the entertainment comes as much from his banter with the prisoners as from the songs, many of which have jail themes. All in all a great showcase for a natural performer. The sound quality is also excellent demonstrating better stereo effects than many modern albums.

I'm not from the US, my family hail from Kashmir and I was born in the UK, grew up listening to punk rock but WOW! The soundtrack literally drips with the era and place it hails from; every time I hear a snippet I swear I can feel the heat and smell the wheat - so amazing!

I liked this album a lot. It starts off strong and gets better through to the two songs at the end, which for me were the highlights. Beautiful lyrics, beautiful voice, beautiful music, beautifully produced. A melancholy album pretty much through and through I felt, and that would be my only criticism. Nothing pacey and upbeat to help mix it up a bit. Four stars from me.
