Expressway to Your Skull

Sadly, Buddy Miles died last February.
If I had to choose one album to remember him by this would be it. He recorded it shortly after leaving Electric Flag where he'd already demonstrated just what a powerhouse of a musician he could be.
With this album, and it's no accident that Lowell George, Jimi Hendrix and Jack Bruce guest here, Buddy invented pychedelic soul. This is a soul album for the late sixties but it hasn't dated in anyway.
As a vocalist Miles has worshipped in the same church as Wilson Picket, Otis Redding and Solomon Burke. As a musician he's straight off the 60's West Coast. This makes for a powerful, riotous freewheeling bash of an album that sounded stunningly original when first released back in '68.

Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles! Live!

A "Santana" release which really does fit into the under-rated category, once again. It dates back, if i remember correctly, to a 1972 outdoor concert with the ex-Band Of Gypsies drummer. If everything was as good as the original first side of the LP, this would be a total five-star album. There are great live renditions of "Evil Ways" and "Them Changes", plus a couple of terrific instrumentals. Carlos seems to be on fire, whilst the backing band lend terrific support.

However, the twenty-five minute "Free Form Funkafied Filth" jam on side two of the LP is rather over-long and over-indulgent, in my opinion. Mind you, it's not bad by any stretch, and some may even find it very worthwhile. Probably takes some "getting into".

Hey pop pickers! Do you despair at the state of British indie music? Need that itch seriously scratching? Man,this is one wild and groovy ride. Weird and wonderful and very much deserving the attention of any curious and open minded music fan.I ain't no world music fan ,but the currently very stale indie scene forces one to search further afield to satisfy ones needs. If you like this, watch the film: Broken flowers (Bill Murray). Alot of this music soundtracks that film brilliantly. Also try Tinariwen (for seriously cool desert blues)or Kasai allstars.

Consolers of the Lonely

Broken Boy Soldier was good but this is in a different league.It progresses beautifully from the debut. Live , the songs on this are quite wondrous and if you ever see them live the idea that it's just Jack White with a backing band is blown out of the water. One of the best bands around.

And if there weren't enough reasons to adore JW , I doubt very much if I'd have discovered Brendan Benson, The Greenhornes and Blanche had it not been for The Raconteurs .

Knowle West Boy

This album is amazing whether you are a Tricky fan or not. After seeing him perform two tracks from this album on Later with Jools i couldn't wait for it's release! I wasn't disappointed. If this album was only half as good i still wouldn't have been. It's got everything. Council Estate has an energy i haven't heard or felt since Punk and Two Tone were born. Puppy Toy is a really strong song - it's funny too! Veronika is Powerful because of it's starkness and the lyrics, and it grows on you. C'mon Baby is one of my favourites becouse it's so catchy without being naff and has great lyrics! Buy This Album if you're a fan, try it if you're not!

Ever had that experience when, while everyone else is rolling about laughing, you're standing there thinking: "that's just not funny". I read the hype, I get the CD, I listened, I listened again - then I went back to the real deal - all that late 60s and early 70s stuff. After that I stopped caring that I just don't get this record.
