As for the "50 Ballroom Favourites" CD ..............
At first listening I was impressed by the quality of reproduction, correct tempi, lack of vocals and rhythms being grouped. However, as a '10 dance dancer' I found that the music did not get my foot tapping and make me want to dance. In fact the slower tempi are quite sleep-inducing. On listening closer, the reason for this is that there is heavy use of strings and lack of brass instruments in most of the tracks. The ones with brass are a bit livelier. There is also a lack of "attack" to the music as if the players are drowsing off - mostly noticeable in the Latin American rhythms which need to be more staccato.
I am sure many people will disagree with me - and I am still ... Read More:

I bought this CD and the other Strictly CD with Bruce Forsyth at the same time and they are both incredible. The songs on this CD instantly remind you of all your favourite dances. They are well sung and at the right tempo for the dances. A must for your collection if you are a Strictly fan.

One of television's beneficial side-effects is to generate audience participation outside the box, not least in the field of ballroom dancing. On the heels of this resurgence has come the demand for suitable music, and the latest CD label to take the floor is Avid, with this quite splendid panorama of terpsichorean temptation. It covers almost every ballroom form, and a wide range of compositions and styles, but all focussed on the primary requirement for a strict tempo.
Although aimed specifically at aspiring hoofers and their teachers, this compilation should have a wider appeal. The ballroom orchestras aimed for purity of tone, and this is particularly noticeable on the tracks by Maxwell Stewart's Ballroom Orchestra, where the ... Read More:

The DVD is a joy. Really first rate instruction. Lovely music. Easy to follow.
The book is much less useful. He simplifies too much, not by being simple, but just by missing out too much information. The step-by-step instructions say nothing about direction (turn)or timing, and this is just cutting too many corners. The best parts of the book are those that give general information about the history and development of each dance, and the pictures are useful to ilustrate particular positions (but the text doesn't really to tell you how to get there).
I'm a great fan of Anton, and both his partners (Erin Boag and Flavia Cacace) are well worth watching, particularly Flavia. She has Latin motion to die for, and any beginner who ... Read More:

I am a fan of the TV show Strictly Come Dancing and read the reviews on here so thought I'd buy the DVD.
I wish I hadn't bothered now. Yeah they can dance and some of the dancing is beautiful but it isn't that good to be honest with you. The music is RUBBISH and the dancing is OK with some nice bits here and there but that doesn't constitute to being good.
I personally think this DVD is a waste of money, the music ruins it for me personally. I could watched some of the dancing they do if the music was much better but sadly it wasn't.
It hasn't put me off watching the TV show but I will be careful what I buy in future.

My wife and I have recently started dancing lessons and thought we would like to supplement that with some dance instruction DVD's. This is the best of the 3 we purchased in that the presentation by Angela and Ian is very good. However, I am extrememly frustrated that it is not divided into chapters which mean you can't go straight to the dance you want. To see the jive for instance you have to play through the whole video as it's the last dance. I'm sure there must be a way with my dvd control but I haven't found it yet!

If you can already dance a few formal steps, this DVD is perhaps too basic for you.
It teaches you just enough to shuffle around a crowded dance floor with some confidence, but no way is it enough to put on a bit of a show, for example your "first dance" at your wedding.
It covers 8 dance styles, four "white tie" styles and four Latin.
If you're starting from zero, this is the place to start. It's fun, and not at all overwhelming.

Got this DVD yesterday and giving it a go for the first time today. Practically gave up almost immediately - impossible to follow. So I thought I would see how other people have got on with it and read the reviews - thank you, very helpful - maybe I will try and persevere but not being a very patient person with much time to spare, I think it's unlikely.
My biggest complaint with this - and other fitness DVD's - is that they never have someone doing the routine with their back to you - know what I mean? Not only do you have to try and learn all the moves but you have to learn them in reverse. Please please fitness DVD makers - we don't need to see your face! I find myself trying to do it by turning the other way round (so I am the same way round as ... Read More:
