A lot of people describe this as Jack and Meg White's finest accomplishment to date. Where it is impressive, it doesn't have the same fluidity as its predecessor, 'White Blood Cells'. However, it's nearly as good. Opener 'Seven Nation Army' has an intimidating, imposing bassline, and the sheer furious tempo of 'Black Math' are both impressive. 'There's No Home For You Here' is a bit 'Queen' but falls below the standard of the two previous songs. 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' is brilliant. It starts quietly enough, but explodes during the choruses, and towards the end with Jack White's wailing guitar. 'In The Cold, Cold Night' is Meg's turn on vocals, and it shows as a weak point on the album. Track six, 'I Want To Be The Boy To ... Read More:

This is a damned fine album. I mean, notwithstanding the fact that it's 'Ecky and not Icky Thump, added to the fact that I am slightly bored with the concept of The White Stripes and wasn't exactly excited to hear that Jack & Meg were releasing a new album in 2007, the content of this album - or at least the majority of it - has won me over. There are plenty of songs on this album that would easily fit alongside the best output of 'White Blood Cells' or 'Elephant' and hearing that they had gone back to the hard-edged, bluesy style they excel at was pleasing.
Straight away, when I heard the lyrics of the title track, especially the lines;
"White Americans, what?/Nothing better to do?/Why don't you kick yourself out?/You're ... Read More:

there is many a man who doesn like the white stripes.
perhaps they are under produced and raw
but they re also
fun
loud
exciting
edgy
jack white surely, is one of this centuries finest songwrites and guitarists
he can write and play any style
and they shine through with a gleaming swagger here
this is the white stripes at their primal best, raw, uncomplicated............BRILLIANT

From the pounding drum intro to opening track 'Jimmy the Exploder' this album is a winner. Check the liner notes; they even give credit for the loan of the 18" floor tom that helps to make this massive racket. Zipping through 18 songs in 45 minutes, these selections are stripped down, raw and full of energy. The reverb is cranked up high, the playing is intense, and the attitude is ferocious.
I've been a bit of a latecomer to the White Stripes, but I've almost caught up now. I think De Stijl is still my favourite, but this one comes close. It's what the White Stripes are supposed to sound like.
Release Date February 04, 2002
I guess the first thing that struck me was the overall look of the album; a cover containing simple shapes surrounding Jack and Meg (Meg looks about 13) and a Dutch name. De Stijl. That's alienating an audience straight away really...having a name people will be unable to pronounce. So flipping through the sleeve I find some interesting ideas and quotations about this weird shapely art they've used for the cover...the artists involved are Paul Overy, Gerrit Rietveld, Theo Van Deosburg and Vilmos Huszar...for all you Google kids. Jack likes to leave a little note in his album sleeves and this one ends with:
"Even if the goal of achieving beauty from simplicity is aesthetically less exciting, it may force the mind to acknowledge the simple components ... Read More:

This album is amazing. It's not the white stripes so don't compare it to them, just listen and make up your own mind. A few years down the line this will be considered a classic album.

Broken Boy Soldier was good but this is in a different league. It progresses beautifully from the debut. Live , the songs on this are quite wondrous and if you ever see them live the idea that it's just Jack White with a backing band is blown out of the water. One of the best bands around.
And if there weren't enough reasons to adore JW , I doubt very much if I'd have discovered Brendan Benson, The Greenhornes and Blanche had it not been for The Raconteurs .
Release Date April 02, 2007
Such an amazing album I love every track. KOL are one of the best bands around at the moment. Can't wait to see them live. 10 out of 10

This album has some great songs. Album opener 'Slow Night, So Long' really grabs your attention and is the second best song on this LP. The best is 'Milk', a cracking tune. 'King Of The Rodeo' and 'Day Old Blues' also get special mention. What carried the Kings of Leon's first LP, 'Youth and Young Manhood' through the weaker tracks was the southernness of the LP. It existed as a complete album of high quality. On 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' they've departed from the southern sound, so there is nothing tying the album together. So alas, though this album has some great songs when the quality of the song dips the album loses a link. 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' is not as good as 'Youth and Young Manhood', but it's a good effort none the less.
Release Date December 31, 2007
Just how many more albums can Radiohead make of such quality? Other bands become very samey, or try to change and fail. Somehow Radiohead manage to change whilst staying the same and keep producing top quality albums. This album just gets better and better with each listen, and in my view a Radiohead classic already.
