I have all three of Madeleine Peyroux's albums now having recently purchased this beauty. All through the album, you can tell the quality and the feeling in her vocal performance. I find it difficult to believe now that it took 8 years before Madeleine Peyroux became a household name with her second album "Careless Love" and not this one. Never mind. This is still a wonderful album.
This album is a launching pad for Madeleine Peyroux to launch from. Her singing style is very similar to that of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith, the jazz and blues divas of their time. It hits off with "Walking After Midnight" and finishes off with a blues-fuelled "Lovesick Blues". The tracks inbetween are also of distinction including "Dreamland", ... Read More:

If you like the voices of Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald at their melancholy best then you'll like this CD.
Madeleine Peyroux has the reputation for being an offbeat and thoughtful character. Maybe because she takes her art so seriously. Strange fruit that is essentially beautiful.

Obviously it depends upon what you like, and this CD is OK but not a patch on her earlier recordings. If like me you highly rated her Love Songs and Live in Paris jazz albums, this one and her more recent recordings will be a disappointment.

This has to be one of my favourite albums that I own. I wasnt a huge fan of her Careless Love album - contraversial statement I know :-)
Maddy has a fantastic voice, slightly more blusey on this album. Couple with the brilliant harmonica player William Gailson. This album is quite different from her others, but well worth the listen.
Favourite tracks are the Scorpian and the Frog and Heaven Help us all.

Diana Krall has been my favorite way to introduce "non jazz lovers" to the genre. Her mellow voice and piano playing style seem to please most everyone. But this record alone (My favorite by far from her), has been responsible for most of the "conversions" to the jazz cause. Specially through "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". A great, great album by any standards. A "must have" to any music lover. A great tribute to one of the best Piano Player/voices in music history - Nat King Cole.

Quite simply, this album is perfect. Stacey has a lovely light voice which isnt at all intrusive, but has the ability to stop and make you listen. I bought this album for myself, listened to it and have now been buying it for other people.
If you are a fan of Stacey or Jim, this album is a must!

What a fabulous album this is! I'll lay my cards on the table - I'm a big fan of Patricia Barber so I expected something super-good. But this exceeds my expectations by a good way.
For me this album marks a big step forward in the quality of Ms Barber's writing (not that it was less than excellent before). Each of the numbers has a more thoroughly "composed" feel to a it than previously, meticulously worked out and with truly stunning arrangements - detailed, multi-layered yet completely fresh and exciting. The range of musical style and nuance is particularly remarkable, with everything from pure torch vocals and delicious small-ensemble jazz, through rock guitar grooves to hip hop. Yet through all this she displays an ability to spin melodies of breathtaking lightness, ... Read More:

Can't sing, is out of tune, has no concept of what a good song is or how to present one, doesn't listen to jazz, doesn't like jazz, and was dropped from her record label! Need I go on?
Release Date August 25, 2003
Although Diana Krall might not be first choice for the best jazz singer in the world she still manages to drip her lyrics like honey over the already sumptuous arrangements in this collection of standards. Her vocals are at once languid and precise, distant and intense and when added to the bittersweet, fully orchestral back-ups, it all comes together in a most intoxicating way. A definite grower; for the impatient listener a first take might be their last but with subsequent plays, the nuances blossom until you realise that you are hearing something rather special.
