One of the many strengths of Ashes To Ashes, along with its predecessor Life On Mars, is the use of music from the period in which the drama is set, perfectly capturing the 'feel' of that moment in time and giving extra impact and meaning to the action on the screen. The music on the soundtrack ranges from hits that are still very well known today such as Duran Duran's 'Girls On Film' and 'Let's Stick Together' by Bryan Ferry to songs that may not have been familiar to some of the Ashes To Ashes audience but have been a real pleasure to discover, such as the fabulous 'Staring At The Rude Boys' by The Ruts. The soundtrack features a good cross-section of both, many of which will bring images from the series straight back to mind - Gene and Alex ... Read More:

A great little book is this and a must have for fans of the TV show. It's full of useful info that I'm sure would come in handy on an action packed Saturday night in town, and plenty of educational pictures as well. Not too demanding on the old brain cells to read and it's not overlong. An extremely funny book and after you have read it, its the sort that you can keep picking up and look at your favourite bits again. Don't lend it to anyone though, unless they give you a receipt or a returnable deposit, or you won't see it again. Very good overall, a good laff, highly recommended. Also have a look at Al Murray's 'Pub landlord' and 'The Post Box at the Crossroads' by Alan Bates.

I absolutely love this show. I think another reviewer said thirtysomethings will enjoy this more and I have to agree. While Life on Mars was brilliant, a lot of the time it did seem to be nothing more than a pastiche of the brilliant Sweeney and Gene Genie nothing more than a piss-take of the legendary Jack Regan. That is not to slag it off LoM was groundbreaking and I adore John Simm and he made Sam Tyler such an empathetic character it was easy to sympathise with Sam's plight.
However (deep breath)...Life on Mars is a different kettle of fish altogether. The first thing that struck me was how cleverly it is filmed. The opening scenes of 2008 Alex tacking the demented Arthur Layton who is responsible for putting her into the `coma' are filmed ... Read More:

With this excellent quality of book in hand, you will definitely feel more about the whole series of Life on Mars. You gonna love it!

I've come ridiculously late to Life On Mars. But in the last couple of days, I had the opportunity to watch both series, back to back in one long run and I've just finished snuffling into the kleenex after watching the final episode. Superb stuff. The perfect ending to a perfect show, which never put a foot wrong. And which contained what has to be, for me, the ultimate classic comedy moment - when LOM did Camberwick Green. I laughed at that until I cried.
Wonderful characters and I agree with the previous reviewer who said that this was no nostalgia trip, but an honest appraisal of how things have improved in the police force since the '70's. Although, I'd go further and say it also makes a point that in some ways - like the over-emphasis on psych-evaluation - we're no better ... Read More:

Yet again, a labour of love for the authors. A well designed and written book charting the second and final series of LIFE ON MARS. If you're a fan you need to get this book. And if you're not, reading this book might change your mind and prompt you to get the DVDs.

This is a good CD with some catchy songs on it, but they can get a bit boring after a while.
But it still has some catchy songs on it, so i'm giving it 5 stars.

Um, my wife bought me this, the Edge Of The 70's and the Mix Tape one for our wedding anniversary this week, mainly due to being of a certain age, I guess, oh and having a massive obscure 80's music collection - I've been collecting since 1978 when I was 12.
I must say a lot of the tracks on this CD are hardly "on the edge" - Tears For Fears? Visage? Landscape? The Cure? Ultravox's "Vienna"? However, there are some surprising cuts on here. It's nice to see that B-Movie finally get on one of these complilations, hopefully Steve Hovington and the boys can finally make a bit of money. They were one of the truly great "undiscovered" bands of the new romantic era. That's the thing with the 80's for every Thompson Twins, Duran Duran and Tears For Fears there was a B-Movie.
