There is no doubt that Opeth are one of the most truly original rock bands of all time. They may one day be looked upon as pioneers that stretched the boundaries of popular music, encompassing, as their albums do, swirling death metal cacophonies and gorgeous, organic folk rock.
Yet this album has not grabbed me as previous LP's 'Ghost Reveries', 'My Arms Your Hearse', 'Blackwater Park' and their peerless acoustic masterpiece 'Damnation', did.
Why? Because around 2001, Opeth became my favourite band, and consequently, I overdosed on them in a big way. I've played them to death. But this album does not let them down, or embarrass the legacy at all, yet i can't give it five stars, as i'm afraid to say, I have heard it before. Anyone ... Read More:

well after a few good reports i finally brought the album and i will have to admit after 15 times listening to it i am still dissappointed, yes the raw musical power is back with some great gitar work and drum work, but and heres the massive but for me there are no songs on there that are truely great songs the lirics to me seemed to be totaly forgotten, indeed even on the 15th play i couldn't sing along to any songs (even while driving along with the music turned up) at least with st anger you had a couple of tracks that blew me away
don't know what went wrong but this ain't in my top 10 of metallica albums

If I were a vulgar young man I would reel off a list of superlatives to describe the intensity and diversity of this magnificent Swedish made long player. However I will choose a more tender approach. I first got into Cult of Luna in 2003 with their 'The Beyond' release. I had recently got involved with bands such as Neurosis and Isis and they fitted in nicely alongside them. However last year, when I went to Roskilde I was somewhat blase about seeing them. I just thought they would be a pleasant alternative to Red Hot Chili Peppers. I was wrong. They were so much more. The minute they came on, basked in red light, four individuals, their guitars siloheted in the smoke, I knew it was going to be special. The main reason for this was the fact that they played ... I brought this album in special edition and i must say it's the best slipknot album yet. songs like: sulphur, dead memories, butchers hook and psychosocial are the best to listen to and backed up by so many other cool tracks this album is a rare treat and the best album of 2008.

I'm new to Gojira and can't quite believe how bone crushingly brilliant this album is. Mastodon would appear to be a major influence and that's no bad thing. Fans of Blood Mountain will love this. Gojira are no clone though and stamp their own identity all over your face. From start to finish it's a brutally heavy rib-snapping tour de force.

Having listened to Sigur Ros and Explosions for years this is immense. If this is their first effort then I have to say 'well done'.
Actually I have to say 'amazing, brilliant, awe inspiring, the best album since 'Sigur Ros's' best offering Takk. If you like the aforementioned bands and GSYBE and MOGWAI then you will love this.

In a discussion recently I remarked to a friend how Nine Inch Nails are the only band who [in my opinion] have never made a bad album. However, I now take my comment back. While the production of the album is first rate, the songs fall far from the industrial noise come conceptual evolutions that have propelled Trent Reznor through the last decades. The opening track (999,999) gives intriguing promise, only to give way to the disappointing melodic electronica that doesn't subside. There is one diamond in the rough though; The Four of us in Here Are Dying. However this instrumental is not enough to rescue the sinking ship that is 'the slip'. Ultimately this album feels little more than Trent Reznor and friends jamming in their studio. Full marks for being bold enough to try a new ... Read More:

I hadn't heard any Mogwai before. Listened to this album on their myspace page and really liked. Sometimes happy but mostly moody soundtracks to films never made but probably should have been. I can imagine Shane Meadows making a film with a Mogwai soundtrack.
A bit of Sonic Youth, a bit of shoegazing, a bit of Pink Floyd, it even reminds me a bit of some Pat Metheny stuff. Whatever it is it's worth listening too. Buy without hesitation if you like proper grown up sounds.
