Santogold

Listen to anything remotely resembling pop music these days and you will always find a trace of the formulaic about it. If nothing else, the 21st century has refined pop music into something of a formulaic commodity. Mind you, there are some would argue Mickey Most was doing the same thing back in 1973...

Santogold's debut does contain some ambitions to meet some kind of blueprint. Upon first hearing I found it utterly generic - a record in search of a hit, if you like. The sound is clean and somewhat calculated.

Geraldine

Who'd have thought that someone could write a song about the relationship between a social worker/client and make it sound so poignant? Glasvegas sound like something from the Phil Spector back catalogue but with a modern twist. Others compare them to the Jesus and Mary Chain but judging from the quality of songs I have heard from this lot they stand firmly on their own. Geraldine is achingly good, all drama and drenched in reverb - treat yourself, it's only 4 quid...you just may fall in love. Expect big things when the album eventually drops in September.

See how they prance on the beach. Look at the hippy's long pink shorts. Aren't they cheeky?

Good little pop number this - will never set the world alight, but a fun-filled head-nodder. Pop should be fun I think! This is as much fun as when Michael Jackson cut down a tree with his hand, or when Madonna wore coffee filters on her boobies.

Take a cute Aussie singer with an amazing voice and pair her with the masters of pop, production house Xenomania of Girls Aloud fame (and also boasting impressive work with Dannii Minogue and of course Cher's 'Believe' in the past too) and you have the perfect package.

Sweet About Me is a genuine gem of a track. Of course Gabriella Cilmi's soulful vocals will draw comparison with the likes of Amy Winehouse but that's really where any similarity ends. In terms of the music, despite being penned by Xenomania, aside from the feisty, flirty ambiguity of the lyrics, it doesn't bare much resemblance to their work with Girls Aloud either.

In My Arms CD1

'In my Arms' is one of the strong tracks on 'X'. I have other favourites which have the edge on this one.
I generally buy Kylie's singles for the remixes or new songs. The previous song 'Wow' was a very good listen.
They remixes of 'In my Arms' on this disc are repetious and forgetful.
The producers should look at something like 'Electro People' by Fox. It's a forgotten timeless electro pop number. It was very well produced with a female Australian vocalist. I can imagine her doing a cover.

Warwick Avenue

Duffy truly is 2008's shining star. Of all the new acts that appear each year there is always one that completely captures that hearts of the nation and whose songs dominate the radio with their brilliance. 2008 is without a doubt Duffy's year. With her debut album still riding high in the top 10 of the UK album chart months after its initial release we now get treated to Warwick Avenue, the brilliant second major single from the rcord (third if you count the title track getting its minor release last year).

please people grow up and listen to some AC/DC !

Black & Gold

I'm sorry but I have to fully disagree with the 1 star review posted on this. Black & Gold is just a brilliant song. It's got an irresistible, infectious beat and great lyrics, and young Sparro is a terrific new, up-and-coming talent. How refreshing it is to see a song like this come out of nowhere and become a huge and memorable success. Definitely one of the best songs I've heard in years.

I went clubbing for the first time in a long time the other week which at my advanced years is probably disgraceful . Putting that aside I found most of the music played that evening dreadfully dull and repetitive and had reached the stage where I never wanted to hear another thudding dance track as long as I drew breath .Then Blind by Hercules And Love Affair came on.
I hadn't heard it before but recognised Antony Hegarty,s voice straight away( I pointed this out to my mates who couldn't have been less interested if I had started talking about the trade deficit with China). It was by far the most interesting thing played all evening . A nice understated bubbling bass line , slightly jazzy arrangement , some cocky brass with the slightly retro disco ... Read More:
