Man, I long for singers to sing with this passion now-a-days, including Simply Red. The majority of this album was written when sad old Red (aka Mick Hucknall) was living in a box room council flat and boy was he firey back then. The resentment, love and sorrow he had for life is conveyed in every note sung on this album to a degree he never really was able to reproduce. Maybe it was the money. Ironic, since it was Moneys Too Tight To Mention that caterpaulted them to their peak. I love this album for not only its mood, not only his firey raw voice but also for the superb melody and music. The throbbing of the double bass, the jazzy piano solos, brass crescendos all brought together in the superb reverb drenched recording and engineering.

This was certainly one of the best albums of the 90's. This edition features a superb live performance from Montreaux show of 1991. Worth getting it just for this DVD alone. Each musician takes turns to put on fantastic show.

Blues in the album chart? Almost felt like a moral obligation to buy this. I can see that Simply Red fans will be confused and its not normal fare for blues fans but its mostly well done and there isn't a huge amount of truly modern blues that can cross over into wider tastes and if Mick doesn't sing as well as Bobby its still credit to him for bringing his hero to wider attention.
The dvd is interesting. Mick comes across as a bit of an arse but talks about this as his future musical direction so it will be interesting to see if that holds true.
Work in progress then.

This is a "timeless classic" like many cd's from the 80's,i'm happy that the songs have been "edited" to their single release, i already have the original cd and have found at times that the album came across like a remix album, that's great, but was more interested in the original single edits
awesome sound quality and quite happy to say that it includes bonus remixes and bonus tracks, but not quite sure if these are the original remixes or edit remixes for cd release
surprized at the attitude some reviews hold against this cd or any cd from the 80's surprized at peoples lack of maturity & knowledge,it seems today that most people are more concerned about music from the past not "fitting in" or they seem embarrassed if it sounds of it's ... Read More:

the third album failed to capatolise on the success of "into the gap"..but then it is one of the best albums of the 80's
the first actual release "lay your hands on me" is here..and athough not regraded as a tt classic i would beg to differ!
the album was preluded by another single "don't mess with doctor dream" which stop a step back to the quick step album....a clever song with its anti drugs message..but by now a lot of us wanted more angst love songs delivered to an electro beat
along the way you get some songs worth of "into the gap" like "future days" "you killed the clown" and "emporer's new clothes" but a the other album tracks dont match the quality!
two more singles were released "king for a day" which is a ... Read More:

along with Duffy these are my 2 albums of the year. Every track is superb, very classy production and I love the use of horns on a lot of the tracks. Only 2 or 3 sound like Texas, otherwise you get Tamla, Nancy Sinatra and a French sound.I wish there were more songs as the 11 fly by when listening and its under 40 mins long. Do another next year Sharleen!

Well. What can I say, but that I'm very disappointed again. Why? First I can't doubt the briliance of Mick's vocal and way of singing. When it comes to performing the music it's also bright. But at the same time I wonder why are there at the moments two electric guitars playing when there's only one at the scene (So not over you), why there's tambourine when I can' see no one playing it (Night nurse), who's playing strings on "So beautiful", who hits tambourine at the fourth beat of a tact and triangle on "For your babies"..... What I want to say is that many parts of music, especially rhythm section, aren't played by the band but probably are playbacked. When it comes to part from Amsterdam, I wonder who's singing backing vocals on these songs, when there's only Mick who's got the mike. If there ... Read More:

Listening to the original cassette version of this album used to be a guilty pleasure of mine, so I was looking forward to this reissue which includes all the bonus tracks from that cassette. However, after hearing about issues with the bonus disc, I thought I'd hold off and see whether Edsel were going to fix it. Six months later, after reading that the disc had been repressed, I thought I'd go ahead and order.
Now I'm pretty sure I've got the fixed pressing of the bonus disc, as I've not noticed any glitches at the start of the "Machines Take Over" track and apart from a couple of suspiciously vinyl-like loud pops much later in the track, it's fine. The rest of the tracks sound just fine to my ears, so I'm perfectly happy with this reissue.
